"They can talk all they want about how much punk means to them, but the simple fact is, they weren't there," Tolbert said. "These kids today have no sense of history. They don't know about Pennywise. They barely know about Epitaph Records. Most of them don't even know about Green Day's legendary appearance in '94 at the L.A. Coliseum. It was a watershed, one-of-a-kind moment in the history of youth rebellion, and if you didn't live through it, as I did, you'll never get it, no matter how punk you pretend to be."

Oh, please! Those bands aren't even real Punk to me.

Tell it to Joey Ramone, Iggy Pop, Johnny Thunders, Johnny Rotten and Xecene Cervenka and see how hard they laugh. (Okay, some of them from the grave.)

This reminds me of children having children. How pathetic!

I find it interesting that when asked about today's "punk" bands most of the pioneer punk artists like what's being created and love the fact that the "torch has been passed". But the self professed old school punk rock fans can't seem to give any credit to the newer bands. I don't know if this is due to the success some of the newer bands have enjoyed with MTV and radio play, but it sounds like hate for the sake of hate to me. I'm not saying that bands like Good Charlotte and New Found Glory are breaking any new ground, they're just having fun playing music and being in a band. I grew up listening to The Clash and I still love bands like Goldfinger and MXPX, it's just fun music.

I enjoyed the article.... It was hilarious. I thought the point was that no one can agree on who the first punk bands were? So the debate about liking new punk vs green day mirrored that of say Sex Pistols vs Ramones vs New york dolls vs MC5.

As for original punk members liking new punk? Well Joe Strummer on MTV said he liked new punk bands, like 182. But I wasnt convinced, I just got the impression he was just trying to be nice and tell the interviewer what he wanted to hear. Listening to his last two albums it seems Joe was more interested in world music than 182.

Who else has come out in support of the new punk bands? And is that beacause they are old and past it? Or do they do it so they can go, "well if you like new punk, you will like old punk, check out our backcatalogue"?

When it comes to punk rock, I tend to be a purist. I just think that in general the bands of the 70's were competing and influencing each other and they made some classic records.  I've seen Blink 182 and though they are as commercial and polished as you can get, they've got a damn fine drummer and their moronic jokes can sometimes be funny (on a good night).  I really used to hate them, but it helps not to take them seriously.

Let's be serious...who are the better bands here: the Damned vs. Sum 41? The Ramones vs. Good Charlotte?  The Buzzcocks vs. New Found Glory?  Not to knock the talent of newer bands, but they have big shoes to fill. I don't ever see Sum 41 making anything on the level of "Singles Going Steady" or "Zen Arcade". You have to love the Onion for poking fun at people like me who will continue to stick up for the old school bands that I was too young to remember when they were in their heyday.    ;)
