I had two fines before on my UK license which they cannot do much about over here. No points at any rate. I got a $5 fine in Montana and a $100 fine in N.C.

The Montana incedent was hilarious, I didnt realise the cops could get you when they are coming towards you head on (they cannot in the UK) I said this to the cop and he gave me a tour of his car and its equipment. I was a bit intimidated by his shotgun...... But the $5 fine was great. [/b]
i thought there were no speeding fines in montana ... or is that only during the day ...

I think I've shared this before, but it's worth repeating.

I had an automatic court case that was about 500 miles from my home in CA (95+ in a 65).  I was so mad I had to travel that far that I was going to fight tooth and nail with all kinds of studies etc.  When I got there, the guy who went before me with a similar speeding offense fought like mad, used studies, and was told he could read those studies as he spent the night in jail and had to pay a huge fine.  I quickly changed my mind, apologized to the judge for disrespecting the rules of his county and pleaded guilty.  Nearly $400 fine was assessed but no jail time, 1 point on my record.  The only guy there who brought an attorney got the same thing I got, with the exception of the large bill he had to pay to the atty.

With the exception of a DUI/DWI and perhaps vehicular manslaughter, attorney's don't help much in moving violations.

I am pretty sure i was in Montana and in a 35mph limit. Perhaps there are some roads with no speed restrictions, but certainly not all of them are that way.

I was driving back to The OC from Humbolt at a ridiculously early time in the morning.  It was about 5:15 AM in Sonoma County and I was going at or over 100 MPH in a 55 MPH zone on 101 (the federal mandated limit at the time).  That's considered Reckless Driving in CA (as well it should be, too) and carried a huge fine.  The cop actually wrote it up as 95+ so he wouldn't have to take me to jail right then, but it was still over the limit for reckless driving.

What pissed me off was that I had no intention of fighting it, I just didn't want to have to drive that far for my court appearance, but it was mandatory and I couldn't get it transferred to a more local court.  So that's when I started thinking, hell, if I have to go that far, I might as well put up a fight.  Bad idea, and I was only saved by the guy with similar sentiment who went before me.

This was also ten years ago when I was young and stupid, so I can't imagine what the fine is now.

All told, with the fine, extra trip to NorCal and increase in my insurance rates, the ticket cost me about $3000.  It was my last ticket until the MD ticket, which was around 80 in a 55 zone coming out of a 65 zone on 95 returning from NY 2 years back.

Always a silver lining though, because I was in and out of court that morning, I drove the Jeep that I bought after selling my BMW (the car I got the ticket in) back down PCH all the way from Sonoma to Newport Beach with the top off from sunrise to sunset.  To this day, the best drive of my life.

it may just be highways ... but i remember reading something about it because the feds were mad at them over the no-speed-limit and they threatened to withhold federal highway funds, similar to DC's defiance of the national 21-to-drink law in the 80s ... speaking of which, don't you think it would have been an easy choice to go to a DC school in the early 80s when you could drink here and nowhere else in the country (save LA)?

I have never missed a date nor has anyone in my dept. Also you gotta remember one thing, if there is a prosecutor present he/she can always ask for a continiuance until ALL witnesses are present. Your best bet would be plead not guilty and ask for no points. In MD if you have been clean 5 yrs. and you agree to plead guilty, they will waive the points. BUT, if you are stopped again those points get put on. Its a probation thing. The other option is slow down a bit. I normally allow for 10 over the limit on highways, residential I am more strict do to kids and such.

 Good Luck!!!
