Transportation in NYC
« on: October 10, 2007, 01:37:00 am »
To all,

I am going up to NYC to have an MIA/Justice weekend. I am wondering what train do you take from Newark to get into the city. I am also wondering what the different lines mean. I ride Metro so is it similar???? Any help is appreciated.....Thanks in advance.

from newark, take the NJ Transit train to New York Penn Station, from there you get on the subway.  buy a ticket from the NJT vending machines.  the majority of NJT trains go through newark on their way to NYC, so you'll never have to wait too long for a train.    http://www.njtransit.com/

to get to T5, you'll want to take the blue line (A/C) to Columbus Circle.  once out of the station, walk south on 8th Ave and turn right (west) on 56th.  continue on 56th until 11th ave.

and btw - most of us dont refer to it by colored lines.  :)  so if you ask where the blue line is, youll get a blank stare most times.

the A/C/E line (8th ave line) is being worked on during weekends. There is no C service. www.mta.info is the best way. I suggest buying a whole day pass - forget what its called - unless you dont plan on taking the subway much. if youre taking it a lot its worth it.

You can also take the train to 50th (C/E lines only - A train on weekends) (hells kitchen) and theres tons of great restaurants (reasonable too) on 9th Avenue. HK is a great neighorhood. i live there so im biased. if youre ever confused on the direction - if you see a ton of lights its times square. go the opposite direction when headed to terminal 5.

and we're quite friendly. you can always ask. also - if youre weary of taking the subway at night - take a cab. its not too expensive. and its not hard to hail one.

btw - the subways are a mess EVERY weekend right now. i highly recommend checking out service changes depending where youre staying. i had one weekend where there were no trains stopping at 50th downtown. major clusterphuck but welcome to nyc and the subway. and walking gets us far!

if you have more questions about neighborhoods etc shoot me a PM.

lol - well yeah i was kinda treating him that way by guessing he's never been to NYC. its one thing to ask which subway is closest to Terminal 5 vs asking about transpo in general.

actually i just wanted to hype hells kitchen. and your fav restaurant is here. maybe we should have a group dinner there.   :D

and did you notice the f'ing 7 isnt running again. not that you'd care sal, but i take that home every night. so f'ing unreliable! im addicted to the MTA site so i can know how its going to f*** with my plans. last time i had to get to columbus circle all hell broke loose and no trains were stopping there. that happens far more often than my liking.
