So are all the new names on this board with this format some sort of flashback to the straight-edge thing? Is everything old new again? Will bands stop having "b-sides" and only release "double-A-sides" like Two-Tone did back in the day?

While I agree with your thought about work I was just saying that I noticed a lot of new members with screen names that were something like-
 ximcoolx
 or
 xiliveinrichmondx

and I took the two "X"s to be some reference to the straight edge movement. The last time I saw so many "X"s in screen names was the last time I thought that straight edge thing was really big -like 95 or so when Earth Crisis still existed

Exactly- the "t"s stand for troubled- thus showing my connection to shoe-gazing, jim beam, and awkward pauses.  ;)

straight edge is the punks who don't drink, don't smoke, don't do drugs, are vegan... there are differing degrees of sXe, but some believed it also includes no sex, etc.  some people took it pretty seriously.  it was big in the late 80's, and many people tattooed straight edge stuff to themselves (XXX or sXe or the like).  i actually have several sXe friends today, but the movement has gotten quieter.

in some cities, the straight edge kids were somewhat, well, violent about it, and there were times when the sXe crowd would beat people up for smoking or drinking-- as happened in detroit from time to time.  most sXe folks will tell you that violence isn't okay, though.

I don't ever recall veganism being a tenet of the straight edge movement.

While the Minor Threat song "Salad Days" may lead one to believe so, the Teen Idles hit "I Drink Milk" would contradict.

The fact that Ian used to scoop ice cream at Haagen Das down in Georgetown might also contradict this.

I think the veganism aspect came later.

Well I know it is discussed in Our Band Could Be Your Life that they had a hard time finding suitable food while on tour.  I dont know if they were just Vegetarians or Vegans, or if it was the Minor Threat or Fugazi chapter.

straight edge is like religion in that some people were more "orthodox" than others

some were vegan, i knew some of those, others smoked but just didnt drink or do drugs.
it was really a matter of HOW straight edged you were.

the only REAL qualification that i saw was that you couldnt do drugs and drink...
