well i've never seen Evanescence but was going to mention them as a nomination, but did have the misfortune of seeing book of love once live as support to depeche mode.

Dr. Doom hit the nail on the head. I was asking for people to discuss and (possibly) agree on which bands deserve the moniker 'Worst Band Ever,' and maybe come up with some objective criteria by which bands can be judged. Whether or not they should be judged, I don't care.

And most of the threads in this forum make me yawn, kosmo. One-sided discussions galore. At least this provokes arguments on musical merit. And I'm bored.   :)

Obviously none of you ever picked up the Ace of Base CD when it came out 15 years ago or so.

"The Sign" might perhaps be the worst song ever by the worst band ever.

OK lets pull out the white board and brainstorm some criteria... Remember there is judgment on ideas presented in this first phase.

It must be a band not the creation of producers in a studio. (The likes of Milli Vanilli, Ace of Base, etc were designed to be disposable.)
The band must have reached a large audience in terms of sales or touring.
The band must be truly incomptent in a couple areas,  songwriting, musical talent, ability to perform material live, etc.

Ahh man, Kottonmouth kings are fantastic!

Whoever mentioned the Beatles in this thread should be hung. I don't care about opinions when it comes to the Beatles. They are the best band ever to walk the earth. Period.

By the way, Josh from 9:30 is the man.

adding to the whiteboard session: i fully agree with all of kosmo's criteria, and further add that the band gets extra demerit points if they actually take themselves seriously, think that they're artistes, etc.

about the "no studio creations" clause - where does that leave britney?  does she count as a studio creation?

OMG.  no one has mentioned federline or paris hilton, they both have major label releases.  we should all be fired.  this thread is officially pointless.

It seems the best way to come up with an answer here is to find a band that NO ONE would seriously try to defend when you start to describe the ways in which they suck.

For everyone who named Beatles, Zeppelin, Rush, Doors, etc... you could probably get at least a few logical, unbiased counter-arguments as to why they don't suck.

There is only one band that comes to mind right now where you could not engage in a debate about their musical competence.  So, please, someone speak up and defend the artistic merit of Limp Bizkit.

ok - its an interesting question but reading the thread it became apparent that it was being used as a way for otherwise intelligent people to be ignorant and smug.  how do you respond when someone considers the dead, the beatles, white stripes, who or led zeppelin (listen to physical graffitti, at least, guy!) as the worst band ever?  its like saying peter sellers is worst comedian ever and the divine comedy is the worst book ever (makes less sense than wookies hanging out with ewoks).  maybe you read an untranslated version and don't speak italian - that's on you . . .

I hate phish, but I respect they're not the worst band ever since 'some of my best friends' used to think they were great.

So that said, my vote is for the mighty Starship.

Anyone dropping known bands like Led Zeppelin and Rush and calling them the worst ever is a lazy jackass just trying to stir up shit, at least be halfway original and mention Queen based on their god-awful 80's output which was almost 100% shit (ever heard "The Invisible Man"? If not consider yourself fortunate).
So...off the top of my head my pick would be Lockup, a horrible L.A. based funk-rock RHCP wannabe band that got signed to Geffen on account of the singers brother working in A&R there and called their album "Something Bitchin' This Way Comes", their effects-dependent guitarist went on to fame and fortune a couple years later playing his bleeps and bloops on guitar for another band raging against that gosh darn machine yet allowing Sony to profit from their music (but he's enough of a rocker not to let an activist mindset get in the way of banging random groupies).

At least Limp Bizkit had the decency to come out of a large toilet when they toured...

Linkin Park has to rank high on the list due to the fact they changed their name in order to be filed closer to Limp Bizkit in CD racks.

How about bands like Matchbox 20 or i think it  was Puddle of Mudd where the lead singer fired all his band mates upon getting signed to a record deal.

Or a band so wretched they got dropped from a tour... Who were the horrid bands that were touring with Weezer at one point.
