Glad to hear that you enjoyed yourself, pollard.
I was there... and the band was good. But I left after a little over an hour, right after 'Beg for that wheelbarrow' song. I didn't leave because the band was bad... but I just wasn't in the mood for a three hour show. When Bob Pollard came onstage, he showed everyone the set list--there were about 50 songs on it.. and I slightly winced--I just couldn't hang that long.
Another reason why I didn't hang for the entire show it's that I'm not terribly familiar with GBV's large body with work. I only have one of their CDs, last year's, 'Universal Truths and Cycles'. It felt more like a test of endurance to stay and listen to a lot of songs I've never heard before. There was also something about the band getting increasingly more drunk as the show went along that I just wasn't digging. I hope they were still legible by the time they did that second encore.
I guess that was it--my first time seeing GBV. They played many of the songs from their new one, 'Earthquake Glue', and I think I'll be picking it up in a bit.
Those were my impressions. Hopefully I'll dig the band more if they come around next time.
