Are you going to come see Pigface on Thursday?

janet weiss--as noted above, see them live and you'll understand.  extra points for being in two awesome bands, neither of which has a bass player

?uestlove (the roots)--phenomenal live performer, although holds back on the studio offerings

grant hart (husker du)--the husker records really hit you over the head, and influenced many that followed.  i always thought that hart's drumming gave them the edge over some of their contemporaries

damon che (don cabellero)--awesome at what he does, which is be completely nuts.  also, one of the local heros growing up

murph (dinosaur jr/lemonheads)--mostly because of the abuse he took working for two big ole jerks.  also, he was pretty cool partying with us in college.  dinosaur jr is also an all-time fav.

In no particular order:

Keith Moon--did anyone really play drums any better?  Watch videos him play and it looks like he's totally out of beat, and yet it worked.  He did rhythms with one hand that some people can't do with two.

John Bonham--the king of the heavy metal beat.

Charlie Watts--I'm including him mainly b/c so many drummers site him as an influence.  He is not flashy, but he never misses a beat and seems to be a great fundamental drummer.  it's not all about flash, it's about keeping the beat.

Mickey Hart/Bill Kreutzman (of the Grateful Dead)---I'm cheating a little by putting them together, but the two of them do things and make sounds with the drums that few others else have done, at least in the rock and roll world.

Neal Peart--sometimes he sounds like two guys playing.

Honorable mention:  Lars Ulrich (great talent), Dave Grohl (he basically plays one style, but does it well--could fill in for Bonham in Zeppelin ever reforms), Jon Fishman (from Phish--the guy can play any type of music thrown at him, he sounds like two people playing also), Tommy Lee (yeah, he's nuts and makes internet videos, but he nails the tubs), and the guys from Rusted Root (there's three of them and they each play different types of percussion, some only with their hands---wild stuff).

 There's probably others I'm forgetting...

Bagster, you've got to come up with more than 4, you saw 4 drummers this week alone! ;-)

Stewart Copeland - his syncopations are unsurpassed, intricate beats

Mitch Mitchell - pure energy, plus who else could keep a drugged up Jimi focused?

Lars Urlich - have to agree with the whiney comment, but just listen to "One (Johnny Got His Gun)"

Ringo Starr - personality and charisma, he is a human metronome

Keith Moon - all over the kit, breaking every "rule" of playing drums- I also heard that he could keep an independent beat with each of his four limbs

Well, at the Backstage, I can't see the drummer...   :D

To be honest, I don't always take note of the drummer unless he or she is amazing.  I shoulda included Stewart Copeland, my bad.

And you had to bring up this weekend, as I skipped the Dirtbombs, with TWO drummers!!  SHIT.  You're just tryin' to make me feel bad, tooms!

(Gotta say, two drummers doesn't usually bode well for me; when does it really improve a band's sound?)

No one mentioned Phil Collins????

Also, along that note, Tommy Thompson, who drummed with Genesis on tour and Powerstation

two drummers doesn't always help if they're playing the same thing--what's the point?  I remember watching a 38 Special video back in my younger days and they drummers played exactly the same thing.  you couldn't even tell there were two drummers.

As much as i would have liked to see the Dirtbombs, the oddest thing there is two bass players along with the two drummers---lots of bottom there.  should make you move...

Bands like the Dead and the Allman Bros. use two drummers well b/c each drummer plays slighly different stuff and compliments the other.

You know Bags, you couldn't see the Wrens drummer but the bass player pointed at you once you got on the bench...

Yes, it's true.  And last night the cello player at Lyle Lovett kept looking at me and smiling when I "hand danced" (it was at the Warner, and folks stayed sitting).  It was actually a little...too much.     <img src="http://pages.prodigy.net/rogerlori1/emoticons/REDDANCE.JPG" alt=" - " />

But the Wrens "point out" was the best 'cuz it was so enthusiastic!

The word "best" is such a difficult term to define and use.  Maybe not the best of all time, but here's a few worth mentioning though:

Steve Shelley - Sonic Youth: the glue that binds it all together

Scott Churilla - Reverend Horton Heat: catch them live and see what I mean

 D.J. Bonebrake - X

 Matt Cameron - Soundgarden

Jimmy Chamberlin - Smashing Pumkins: just listen to Gish

 Billy Conway - Twinemen/Morphine

Neil Peart, John Bohnham, blah blah blah. You guys take the magazines you read too seriously.
