Roll Call: Robbie Fulks

Ok, the shows not until Thursday, and given the small size of Iota, and the fact that I probably already know of 10 or so people going, I shouldn't be inviting strangers, but Robbie told us all to invite 100 friends on his website...

 The blurb from the Post:

Another person who can make you laugh is Robbie Fulks. He is a fine performer and songwriter who can go from amusing (taunting Ryan Adams, covering ABBA songs) to earnest (with his repertoire of classic country tunes). Fulks is always unpredictable (he rocked a P.J. Harvey song one night) and I've never left one of his gigs without thinking, "Man, that was a good show." I bet you walk away saying the same thing if you see him at IOTA (703-522-8340).

ever since Lulu made that dreamy comment about shagging rednecks in the toilets, he's been going through a metamorphosis

I've seen him thrice @IOTA.  I'm going if he's got his band, but not if it's a solo deal.  Half the fun is his backup: Grant Tye is a killer guitarist and it's fun if Lorne (bass) or Joe Terry (keys) sing.  Robbie did a show a year or2 ago there with the band... everything was going well until he got into a 6 or 7 song set of solo acoustic country b-side stuff while the other guys smoked cigs out on the sidewalk... Robbie thinned out the audience a little with that, and then got annoyed that people left and laid some put-down on the rest of us, so I split not caring for his attitude.  Ivy-league asswipe!
The other experiences were better- I remember one where they were into incorporating riffs from ELP's Brain Salad Surgery into the whole set- putting the Karn Evil #9 guitar solo into Robbie's country tunes, for ex, or ending a bunch of songs with that "see the show" climax- hilarious!
BTW It's always a sardine can in there when Fulks plays, so no need to promote

Yes, I realize it will be packed. My gang will just have to be there early.

From what I can tell, he will have the band with him. Don't know if Joe Terry will be making the trip though.

I would agree he is much better with the band than without, but he's not bad just solo.

Oh, but I dont really remember that show. $2 vodkas destroyed my mind.

Plus 2 weeks is the longest time without a show since January, I think.

This is from the Seattle Weekly's article describing the best moments in Bumbershoot (Seattle music festival) history:

Doug Cavarocchi: This little girl who looked to be about 8 years old walked up to Robbie Fulks and handed him a note that said, "I'm your biggest fan, I know all your songs. Can I please sing with you?" About halfway through the set, he brings her up, and they sing "Parallel Bars" togetherâ??she sings Kelly Willis' part. It was really great, right up till the endâ??I think he forgot that they end up cursing each other out. You could see on his face, like, "Oh, God, what's about to happen?" And the little girl, without blinking, sings, "That's 'cause you're an asshole." And he laughed so hard he actually fell over.

Well that show proved a few things:

 1. Lulu hates country.
 2. Markie can enjoy any music where there is some energy and some melody.
 3. You shouldn't gorge on Thai food before a show.
 4. Robbie's new material is nice enough, but you always wish the artist would play as many of the old "hits" as possible.
 5. All my exes don't live in Texas
 6. Edbert is a real person, and not a Bombay Doors alter ego
 7. There are dorks on other chatboards who happen to be nice in person as well.
 8. Having a sexy wife to go to shows with is just lovely.
