Can we talk about pornhub for minute?  Of course we can, it's my thread.
I'm back to Xfinity from U-Verse due to franchise agreements that prevent competition in my new condo, but that's for another discussion.
Anyhow, so during sign up, the tele-sales guy screws up and only gives me 6 mpbs for my new service.   As I'm picking up my modem for a self-install, the nice guy behind the counter points this out to me.
"Hey, you're only getting the 6 mbps service.  You can't stream porn with that."
"Dammit - I asked for the 75 mbps SPECIFICALLY so i could stream porn."
"I hear you, let me fix it.  It's only $5 more."
"Nice, thanks."
"No problem.  Hey did you hear pornhub is going to subscription only?"
"No shit?!  I'm without home internet for 4 days, and the entire internet collapses outside my watch"
Well it turns out that the nice clerk was wrong.  Pornhub is only taking the HD porn behind the subscription plan.   I find this interesting because this is slightly contrary to how I select my porn.
It usually goes something like this:
1) Whats being watched now - as you all know, there's usually 6 videos from the catalog recommended as "being watched now" - I rarely can be bothered to search or hit the categories.
2) Then I look at the percentage of Thumbs up.  I generally don't watch anything that isn't given a 91% or higher of thumbs up.  You've got to have standards, but the sweet spot is somewhere in the 92-93% range with over 500K views.  You really can't trust any videos under that number as being properly screened for quality.
3) Then I look at the type and quality of the girl(s) in the video - everyone has their own preferences, and Smackie has his too.
4) Only then is the tie-breaker HD quality or not.
So I found it odd that pornhub put HD quality and not most watched or most liked or any other reasonable criteria behind their paywall.
Yes, I prefer HD quality videos, but putting a crappy move in HD does not make a shitty move better.  It just makes it more clear how shitty the movie is.
Anyhow, so I'm not too alarmed about pornhub's new paywall, but I think there's too much free porn to make a worthwhile and profitable Netflix like experience for porn.    So for now, there's no reason to get alarmed.  Yet.
