wow.  i'm glad i don't go to interpol type shows and run into mean looking, stoic fans.  i'll stick to the circle pits and fist pumping at flogging molly this monday.

I sympathize with not wanting to dance or not being a really "movey" type of person, I'm not either, and I know dancing ability is a special embarrassment for guys.  I don't have a problem with people standing still, it's more the angry glares in response to my polite/friendly smiles that are a pain in the arse.  I mean, I don't expect everyone to start screaming like idiotic fratboys, but they could just relax a tiny bit without relinquishing their hipness, I would think.
 
 Sad, because some of those hipster fellas are kind of cute, but so mean looking I would never dare to talk to them...I'm sure they see that as a blessing, as I might infect them with my horrifying yuppie tendencies.  Oh well.  Personally, I'm usually so happy to 1. not be at work, and 2. be out of the house, listening to music that I love, that even the sullen starers don't bother me all that much.  But I admire the less self conscious people a lot more, I have to say.

   I think i was glaring too, not at anyone in particular though.  I was angry though, because last time i saw SM was when they played the Ottobar and there was 150 people there, and everyone was diggin em.  
 
   Six months later, i couldnt FIND a spot to even see the stage (and i'm 6'1") and when i looked down at the floor....no one was even head-bobbing.   So sure, i was pissed that all those people who cared NOT about SM, were way closer than i.  
 
   i did go downstairs and annoy people during Interpol though    

i agree, i caught them open for the fire theft at black cat and the place was EMPTY ... big difference to that show ... i like those guys, got a good vibe going, like the spotlights (thankfully they don't strobe), not great songs but i'm sure they'll get better ...

 a) when you're at a movie theatre, you often have a choice between, maybe, 10 different movies.  not so when you're bored on a tuesday night and go hit up a show for no particular reason.
 
 b) going to a show is like a night out at a bar with some music playing.  sometimes i'd rather spend $5-$15 and check out a band i don't know very well than just go across the street to chief ike's or something.  not so with going to the movies (unless it's the drafthouse).

If anyone cares, I'll be at the Queens of the Stone Age show, up front, rocking the fuck out. Anyone near me at the Pixies shows (esp. Philly) probably was a little afraid, especially during "Caribou" when Frank shrieks "REPENT!" Some shows just make me lose my shit, but I admit that lately in DC people tend to be a bit more rigid than usual and I feel a bit more reserved as a result. But anyone that knows me also knows that I have fun, I really don't care what I look like. I hate to admit I agree with Rhett, but if you pay the dough, do what you want as long as you're not messing up someone else's evening by talking loudly, being a drunk jackass, and hurting people. I'll never forget the times that an audience made the show even better...Prodigy back in 1998 @ 9:30 (the entire main floor seemed to be jump up and down at the right moments) comes to mind.  My thought though is that if you're not going to a concert to enjoy yourself and have a good time, then why bother going? I know that people aren't going to be happy and smiling at a Bauhaus show, but on the other hand, why not try to enjoy yourself just a bit? Bands appreciate it when people give some feedback instead of seeing a wall of Chinese terra cotta warriors.

I guess I'm just not one who sees shows for the sake of alleviating boredom. There's so many other options in life. To me, shows are something I look forward to and get excited about. But I guess I don't see standing in a crowded room of strangers, often smoking, often loud, and often rude, as something that is fun unless there is a great band involved to make the elements I don't enjoy tolerable.
 
 Not criticizing, as Sonic would lead you to believe. Just differing priorities, I guess.

 Right-O.  I'm also curious why one STAYS at a concert when they hate the band...unless you're waiting for the Academy Bus and all your little classmates.  Why - too - would you then bitch and moan and denigrate the band the next day on this website when you already said prior to the show that you hate the band, their fans, and the horses they rode in on?

I agree, it would be absolutely retarded -- in the most non-pc sense of the word -- to go to a show when you "hate the band, their fans, and the horses they rode in on", then come onto the message board and bitch and moan about the show ... who in their right mind would ever do that?  more importantly, when have you seen that done on this board?
