I interpreted that singing about Walmart was somehow more valid than singing about buggies.

Do we really know that DBT really came from the poor rural South? Sure, they sing about it, but Patterson's dad was a successful Muscle Shoals studio musician. And Patterson and Cooley both went to college, though they subsequently dropped out. It's not like they're hillbillies who grew up in a tar paper shack lacking plumbing.

i'd rather not go into a dissertation on alt-country and alt-country-rock ... but i'm sure you know that the former genre encompasses many staunch traditionalists who try their best to stick to old-timey and mountain instruments and songs

alt-country-rock, as i understand it, is rock n' roll informed by the spirit of country and roots music (not country music that exists outside of nashville's popular and modern conventions) ... wilco, DBT, and many of the more "popular" alt-country groups would fall into this category, i guess ... while OCMS, sun volt, lyle lovett, etc would be straight-up alt-country

and who ever said anything bad about it? defensive much? [/b]

no, I don't know about their personal upbringing ... but they don't sing about an IDEALIZED version of the poor south, which would be songs about hillbillies living in a tar paper shack that lacks plumbing ... they sing about welfare, wal-mart, and trailers ... whether or not they grew up with those things, it rings true, but it's no more "valid" than singing about buggies, i just appreciate it more because not many good musicians do it ...

Whose IDEAL of the poor rural South would include hillbillies living in tar paper shacks with mo plumbing? I don't think I'm understanding you.

As a schoolteacher in the rural South in the late 90's, I had at least a couple of students who didn't have plumbing in their home...and I wasn't really that rural...and driving through parts of Alabama, some of the houses may as well be tar paper shacks...

true true ... you're right, and that was a bad example ... i just think that DBT has a more modern and realistic take on the lifestyles of the modern south than most songwriters ... and i do have some frame of reference here, i spent nearly every summer of my life in the sticks outside of cleveland, georgia

ben folds and many others who sing about wal-mart often do so with a healthy sense of irony, ben folds in particular sings about the south from the perspective of: "i grew up in it, now i can kind of mock it lovingly", very different than DBT ... and you're right, this is getting inane ...

I will add this to the list of HoyaSaxa stereotypes, right after the one about welfare.
