Not really diggin The Dead 60's who sound more like The Specials then the Clash..  The new Coral is in line with the first record.  If you like edge guitar  sounds the Sugarplastic record is great.

I got the coral. It is Ok, but it has lost the spastic naivety the first album had. They were never the unicorns, being so polished and all, but the songs did go all over the place, a bit like early gomez.....

I noticed that people were putting it in their best of lists. I might give them another chance....

i will agree that the production on the new Coral sands off the edges, in fact one reviewer thought the bands choice of using the guys from Portishead as producers was a bit of a misstep on the bands part.  i actually give the band props for not going over the top with the vintage keyboards, like some many other bands do.  the coral remind me of Prefab Sprout, one wonders what the hell they are singing about and the records are just great to listen to, but in the end aren't going to set the world on fire.

if you are looking for the sound of a young band having fun, checkout The Shout Out Louds.  while  re-listening to recent records, i was flipping back and forth between the SOLs and the Bloc Party  and realized how much more I enjoyed the SOL record.  "Howl Howl Gaff Gaff" at first didn't grab me but listening to again made me appreciated it more.  Unlike the Bloc Party record whichs sounds like they are just trying to hard to be frantic, while the Shout Louds are just enjoying making a record.  It reminds me a bit of De Novo Dahl.  I will say I'm enjoying the Bloc Party remixes as proof of the vocalist's talents.

one more thing about the Coral, i suspect the live Coral experience will be lessen as the band guitar player is no longer touring due to stage fright. currently they have a stand in...

"Hey Now Now," such a very Markie song....

I'm in a similar boat (not the same, just similar) as I've been largely unimpressed this year.  For some reason I've gotten very few new albums -- I think the lack of inspiration has kept me from testing out a bunch of those I've heard about.

I do really like the new Decemberists, Brendan Benson, Sleater Kinney, Ok Go (which I understand has limited appeal).

Other albums I like (QOTSA, New Pornographers, The National, Idlewild) but am not dazzled by.

But I've completely missed (i.e., not heard) a lot of the albums folks are putting on their year end best of lists:  Sufjan, Architecture in Helsinki, Clap Your Hands or Say Hi to Your Mom, Josh Rouse, 2nd Franz Ferdinand, Hold Steady, Shout Out Louds, Hot Hot Heat, Low, new Of Montreal, (I'm still waiting for The Oranges Band), Pernice Brothers, etc...

Or "A to B." Or "Decent Days and Nights." It was a tough call and I love them all. In the end, I consulted my iTunes and "Hounds Of Love" was most played, so the evidence was irrefutable.

No that list looks good. Makes me want to go to Bliss....

 Thankyou. [/b]
Sweet. My pleasure. I'll be playing more than a few of those tomorrow night as well as a few possible candidates for 2006's top 35, or top 80, or top 51.
