Fewer bands that you like playing the 9:30?
« on: November 15, 2007, 06:55:00 pm »
I was just thinking the other day about how there seem to be fewer bands I like that got booked to play the 9:30 in 2007. There were tours by Interpol, Queens of the Stone Age, Social Distortion, the Hives, the Chemical Brothers, etc. this year and all of those bands used to come through with some degree of regularity. None of them except the Hives made it to DC. Does anyone else feel somewhat surprised that there weren't more shows or tours that made it to DC (and specifically) the 9:30 this year? Maybe I'm just old (insert invitation to Brian Wallace to make cynical comment) and I am not expanding my horizons as much as I should, but I'm curious to hear what all of you think.

I'm like that with the Black Cat lately...but I've been to the 930 Club fairly regularly this fall.

Ironically I seem to be going to the Black Cat a lot more this year than the 9:30.

It's been this way for several years for me.  Black Cat gets more stuff I like... But a lot of those acts, aren't going to bring a thousand people in.  I think I counted less than 50 at the David Bazan show a few weeks back.  Wouldn't it be sweet if 930 had a "backstage" like the black cat for smaller acts?

Also, the Rock And Roll Hotel seemed to be taking all the good shows for a while, but this seems to be slowing down.  I wish that place was in a safer part of town.

maybe i am getting old but i was thinking the same thing.  i cannot remember the last time i was at 930.  LCD SS?   toooo much mediocre bland shit. some of it i have seen once and that was enough. the world needs a new punk revolution ala 1976-77.  cbgb's, sex pistols.

oh yeah the rock and roll hotel has to change their name.  i am embarrassed to go to a venue with that name.  also at the warlocks show the venue soundman told two opening acts that they had one song left over the pa during their very short sets.  i have never seen this before.  kind of pissed off the bands.

Last year and especially two years ago, Black Cat seemed to get most of the shows I was interested, but they've fallen off this year quite a bit, I think. Rock 'n' Roll Hotel took a lot of the Black Cat's better shows, I think. I've actually been going to more shows at the 9:30 this year than Black Cat. I think it just goes in cycles, and much of it depends on what music you're listening to at the time, I suspect.

Me too. And, I wish some of the shows at DC9/BC/RnR started a little earlier. (I never go to IOTA anymore...)
I haven't been to the club a lot this year for work/personal reasons, but looking at the calendar I feel the acts coming through recently were slightly better than late last year into this past January/February. Just unfortunate for me, I still have a tough time getting to shows after 9 pm during the week.

Ditto.  I don't bother with shwos at DC9 or RnR Hotel during the week; chances are too good that headliner will start incredibly late.

I find Black Cat better than the other two at adjusting times during the week...though start times are later than 9:30.

I've just gone to less shows generally this year...though I make up for it by going to SxSW and Lollapalooza, I suppose.

Om/Grails/Jack Rose at the RNR ended a little after midnight which I thought was surprisingly early.

The pushy douchebag soundguy threatened to cut the power on Grails over the PA which honestly disgusted me and was something that I also have never seen before. I hope this isn't a regular thing over there.

As for the original question, I also have found myself going to the black cat more than anywhere else this year. Kinda wish the BC got those om/grails/Jack Rose and Black Dice/Pissed Jeans shows.

I haven't noticed a dropoff in my 930 attendance, but Black Cat definitely. They had some great shows on convenient days of the week earlier in the year, but I don't think I've went there since D-Plan.

I've noticed this trend for a number of years at the 930. They seem to book either more mainstream stuff or bands who would play my ground floor half bathroom if I gave them a booking.

I have to say i could go a month or more without seeing a show i am dying to go to at 930 and the Cat. I think RnR Hotel has changed some of the dynamics of the city, but I also know that almost every venue has taken some big hits this year. Attendance is down almost across the board. The Cat is doing mainstage and backstage shows on the same nights, they never used to do that. And they have so many more local shows and dance nights. You can go a month with one or two main stage shows at the Cat.

Actually I don't think they book more mainstream shows because I've only been to 3 shows there this year. In 05 and 06 I was going to a few shows at the club each month.  I think Rams Head has a far better calendar for mainstream music.
