They were on time and they were as great as these legends of music ever were. For the record, since reforming for the reunion tours the Pogues have not canceled or been unusually late for a gig. In addition, even though Shane has his demons, and some friends of mine saw him being helped up the delivery ramp on teh side last night and they said he looked rough, his voice was STRONG. Yeah, a bit of slurring now and then, and you would too if you were drinking and had no teeth, and a line or word in or out here or there, but this is Shane MacGowan. This is the Pogues.

Took the words right out of my mouth, err, keyboard. I can't remember the last time I was this excited for a show. I want to the club in 84 or 85, but there was a sign that said, "Pogues - Sold Out. No Chance." I finally get to make up for that error frrom 20 years ago!

that's so sad...i'm glad you'll have a chance to see them tonight. i saw shane mcgowan about 6 or so years ago at the 9:30 and he was in really bad shape at that show. a week or so before that performance, a friend of his od'ed in his apartment outside london. i feared that it would be cancelled, but he went on anyway. i remember him barely being able to stand on his own.

anyone planning to knock back a few pints beforehand? i'm trying to decide where to pre-game...

We're doing dinner at Nanny's (though we should friggin' find a place to eat outside), and will be at DC9 by 8:00 to have a few pops before the show.

I tell ya, they are going to knock your socks off - I was fully expecting it to be another tired reunion for the $$ but honestly because most of them are sober now and shane is under control they are possibly better than they ever were - it was such a great gig - I am still on a high today

I got to see 2 great gigs this week - B&S and The Pogues - lucky me!

I wonder are they thinking of writing any new music?

Great gig tonight from the boys.  My girl and I had a good time.  Basically the same listed from the ninth, minus the beer tray.

Meh.  It was good, not great.  It was certianly nice to see the most famous lineup back together, but I've seen the Pogues before, and I've seen Shane and the Popes a few times also, and it was just more of the same stuff.  Geez guys, write some new songs!

I don't know what I expected, of course they're going to play their best & most well-known songs.  BUt I was a little underwhelmed.

Side note:  did anyone see a little bit of arguing  b/t Shane and Spider on stage?

Not to hijack the thread or anything, but a fellow named Leeson used to be in the Popes and now plays with his own band called Neck ( http://www.neck.ie -   http://www.myspace.com/neckireland ).    They're coming to the states next week and are playing the Velvet Lounge on the 24th.  The fact that my band is playing with them has nothing to do with my unsolicited post     :D    .

I didn't catch the arguing.  I only saw the last half of the set and the two encores as it took me that long to stake out some real estate where I could actually see the band from the top bar and shift into it when the previous occupiers left.

What a fun, fun show! I've never seen the Pogues before, so it was all pretty fresh for me. The crowd was really into it. In front there was a lot of pogo-ing and even some gentle, good-natured moshing at times. Shane slurred more than a "bit". I think I understood what he was saying less than 10% of the time. But I agree with whomever posted above that much of his drunkenness seemed like an act to me. I have no doubt he does some drinking before the show, but I think he exaggerates his drunkenness quite a bit for the audience. He clearly drank water for the whole show until near the end when most of the bottle of whiskey he finished off ended up on the floor or his shirt.

I loved William Whitmore! I would have bought both of his CDs last night, except 9:30 was overcharging again ($15). No thanks. I'll get them from Amazon or directly from his label.
