Beth Orton?
« on: March 10, 2006, 12:16:00 pm »
Suprised there isn't more chatter about this show... Having never seen her does anyone know if in the past she plays solo or with a group.  Seeing as the current album is more acoustic than electronica I was wondering if she might be playing with the people she recorded the record with i.e. jim O'rouke
T.Rex

I've seen her twice at the 9:30. Both times with a group. She was good, but not earth shattering. Don't see a need to see her a third time. Not like her songs or persona have changed that much.

I'd recommend seeing her once if you haven't seen her at all.

I'll be there. This will be my second Beth Orton show at the 9:30 Club. The first was in June 2002. I quite enjoyed her performance then, and I'm looking forward to this show. As I recall, in 2002, she performed most of the show with a band, but her final encore at least was just her on acoustic guitar.

I saw her at the 930 in 1999 for a dollar.  It was a good show.  Definitely worth a dollar.

man, i was at that show and didn't even remember until you just posted that. i'm pretty sure kelly willis opened and was a bit better, but considerably hotter. it certainly wasn't worth much more than a dollar. i saw orton open for beck once, too. i fell asleep when she was playing. i'm not a huge fan, obvs.

I was at that show too, and it indeed was a dollar.

Kelly Willis was better and hotter. And both were good, in my opinion.

The show was sponsored by WHFS, which didn't play any of Kelly Willis' music (a point she noted in her set), and may not have even played Beth Orton's music at the time.

The WHFS dj who introduced both acts was met with a large chorus of boos.

I saw her back in 97' at the 9:30. Not exactly one of the stand-out performances I've seen that year. She was just ok..

Saw her in June 99 at the 930; she seemed a bit tentative and appeared to have stage-fright.  But her tunes were good; this was around the time of "Central Reservation", and she still had a fair amount of groove and atmospherics in her music. Second time was in June of 02, also at the 930, and she had more of a band and a considerably perkier stage presence, and gave a better, more relaxed and very fine performance, performing much of the "Daybreaker" album. I'm sure she'll be good this time around; if more folkie and heading into Suzanne Vega land, which can be a good thing.  Her new album is def. pretty mellow and not much like "Trailer Park" at all ("Trailer Park" being one of the best albums of the 90s).  Nice songs though. I'd have picked up a ticket and attended if it wasn't a school night.  Enjoy.

Saw her in 1997 in London at a church. Yes, that's right, I said church. Kinda weird sitting in pews for a concert, but it was a great show. Then again, she was promoting Trailer Park at the time. This new  album's alright, but it's no Trailer Park.

Was a pretty good show.  I didn't really know what to expect as my only knowledge of her material is her work with the Chemical Brothers.

She was pretty hoarse and clearly wasn't at 100% due to her cold, but it was still a pretty good show. I liked the songs she sang solo more than the songs she sang with her band.

She said she had a cold.  Heck it is the first day of the tour and I know she didn't blow out her voice yet.  Agree about solo/band but even the band songs were good.  Drummer was reading the lines off a chart!  First show with her.  Couldn't really tell though.
