What did you read a bad review in? I think I read one...in Paste, or one of those paper mags of that ilk...but the rest have been good.

read a thing today where Rhett was saying he was the dungeons and dragons type in high school, which i thought was pretty funny

Hey Jaguar, do you like The Volta Sound?  I am really enjoying their Cuts 2000-2004. I saw them open up for Sonic Boom in Cleveland a few years ago and they were great live.

I've got their test press 7-inch.  It was later released on Cow Hound records  :D

I didn't say they were bad reviews, I said they were 'eh' reviews, but semantics aside I was referring to a review in magnet magazine

there are also two bad reviews at metacritic.com

except Rhett Miller's solo album:

 Magnet
 Shallow and superficial.

Looks like they have it in for the 97's, solo or as a team

I've got it in now & it's pretty awesome. Especially considering the dearth of quality Whigs live material.

It's short, but o' so sweet. It contains the great Superstition/Going to Town seque that they were so fond of during their last couple of tours. Recorded on Thanksgiving in N.O. w/full band (horn's, backup singers, etc.) - Has a few classic Dulli-isms, like: "Shake that turkey out of your fucking fat bellies"

 Track listing:
If there's hell below (we're all going to go)(4:48) (Curtis Mayfield cover I believe)
 Blame, etc. (4:40)
Superstition / going to town (5:35)
 Debonair (5:08)

Not sure that I can answer this question fairly as I've only heard a few things by them.

Honestly, not too impressed but hear a lot of potential. They strike me as sounding sort of what The Beta Band may have sounded like way back in their early days. Couldn't really say for sure though.

Would like to hear them explore a lot more Psychedelia and in a decent studio setting with the right engineers and production. Maybe they've already done so and I just haven't heard it yet.

Gentlemen is a classic - I bought it on cassette when I was living in Germany because they were playing Stuttgart in a few weeks and I hadn;t been to a concert in ages and I wanted to know some of their songs

yeah, Lowlin Wolf is a great CD - I love that segue between Superstition/Going to Town - brings back memories of transcendental Whigs live experiences

The what jail is like EP also has a few live tracks and in the glory days of Napster I also downloaded some live Whigs of varying quality - would be happy to put it on a CD for you
