I received a share holder missive about the state of itunes, and these pre-sales were touted as boltstering sales X percent and as an incentive to get bonus tracks from artist and entice labels to use ITUNES PLUS. I'm an apple homer, but this is starting to sound like 21st Century payola.
not quote payola IMO, since that implies one person paying to have other people listen to something... in this case, it's those who are listening who are chosing to pay. i don't blame the artists at all. people have stopped buying albums. rewarding one's most loyal customers is a standard business practice. There's little incentive to reward the loyal customers, they're going to buy it anyway, these perks are for those on the fence. Loyal fans get secret/surprise shows, free downloads, unique merch, etc. These Itune deals, are aimed squarely at Joe Undecided, you my friend aren't the target demo but you get the benefit of their new digital tactics. Though I'll conceed Payola is probably not the appropriate term, it's the first that came to mind when the thought of bribery crossed my mind.
