Johnny Cash and Joe Strummer butchering Redemption Song
« on: December 02, 2003, 04:21:00 pm »
Anybody heard the version of Cash and Strummer butchering Marley's Redemption Song? I heard it a couple of weeks ago, and it was gawd awful. Talk about two voices not being fit for a particular song. Marley is probably in heaven kicking both of their asses.

Are you refering to the version on Strummer's "Streetcore"?  It's great.  There are so many bad covers of that song.  Strummer did a great job on a great song.

Anyone know if this Darrell Scott dude is any good- he's doing a tribute to Cash show tomorrow at the ken-cen millenium stage
Honors Tribute to Johnny Cash featuring Darrell Scott with
Dave Giegerich and members of the Hula Monsters:
Soulful country music iconoclast Darrell Scott leads a
tribute, with steel guitarist Dave Giegerich and members
of the Hawaiian, Country and Western swing band, the
Hula Monsters, to 1996 Kennedy Center Honoree Johnny
                   Cash.

I can't imagine Cash & Strummer doing a bad cover of anything to be honest, but Redemption Song does sound like a bad mix for Cash...Strummer I can see doing it brilliantly though.
 Sounds interesting.

I think the version on his album is pretty bad.

The production values must've been quite poor.  Was Joe strapped for cash then?

let me join in:

The version on streetcore is acoustic and free of Jonny Cash. I like this version.

The version that is getting played on Woxy is really similar, but the vocals are half strummer, half cash. Cash' voice really does not fit well with the song. the bits Joe sings alone sound fine.

 Oh and nice movie Dupek.

word; the Streetcore version is great; you can tell it's produced by Rick Rubin

The Cash/Strummer version is produced by Rubin as well.

I don't like either version.  I think the Streetcore version is a blight on an otherwise excellent album.

White folks (with the possible exception of Bradley Nowell) shouldn't attempt Marley tunes.

But I don't think Brad will be covering much nowadays.
