Go! Team last night...
« on: March 20, 2006, 11:24:00 am »
No one mentioned this on the board, which I won't go into, but the show was fucking great, without a doubt one of the better shows I have ever seen at the Black Cat. The audience was way into them, they were so full of energy, so on, it was great.

This is in stark contrast to their SWSW performance, which my girlfriend didn't really like, though poor sound may be partially to blame for that one. She concurred with the loving of last night though. They need to come back on a night i can dance.

Had I known Medications were opening before it sold-out I would have gone.  I didn't find that out until too late though.   Glad to hear it was a good time.

Um, yeah, Medications are good and all, but you could not have found a band much further away from the sound of Go! team. I'm not saying it has to be a perfect bill, but this was a pretty bad mismatch, and no one there was really into Medications, so it sucked for them no doubt.

I don't know. I was a little dissapointed in the Go Team show last night. I was really excited to finally see them, and really like the album, but I felt it worked better on the recording than live. It may have been where I was, but a lot of the more subtle recorded sounds were obscured by a lot of noisy guitars and drums. Maybe if there were a better balance, I would have enjoyed it more. But I also (and I am probably the only one at the Black Cat that thought this) could not really get into Ninja's act. Again, I think this is just me, but I've seen so many better frontmen and found her shtick kind of boring and unexciting. The whole show I felt like I was a part of a massive celebration, but I had no idea what we were supposed to be celebrating. For the two other acts preceding the Go Team, both bands opened up with great songs, but then got kind of repetitive. Although I thought the Medications had some amazing musicianship and Talkdemonic could have taught the Go Team a thing or two about blending recorded music with a live set.

Interesting. It's funny, i found myself not caring about the differences between the set and the CD. They are quite different, but that happens when you have a CD that is full of as many samples as theirs, and you then try to replicate it with lvie instruments. The bottom line is, you can't. I felt that while it was different, in many ways it might have even been better. Wht might have been lost in the translation was easily replaced by their full live sound. To my ears anyway.

Ninja's act got a bit old, i admit, but it was par for the course.

Are you implying that we're all aging hipsters who were more excited last week about a Pogues reunion tour than a concert by The Go! Team??   :p

Go Team are better on album than live. Live, there is extra rapping by Ninja and this has proven to be a major distraction, imho.

Not so much aging, no. Just seems as my taste in music continues to grow and change, the same bands get talked about time after time on this board. Not that I still don't like many of the same bands, but there is so much more out there. And whether the reasons be age, maritial status, musical snobbery, financial, laziness or otherwise, I feel like many of the board folks just aren't interested in trying out new music as much as they used to be. Hence why I don't post much, as I have nothing new to add to age old conversations about Ted Leo or Bright Eyes. I still like Ted and hate Conor, just as i always did, but I guess the saturation of music i get because of BY gives me a bigger musical palet to work with, or at least an easier time creating the palet.

Nothing negative meant by this, just that it wouldn't surprise me if many on this board could care less about the Go! Team, even if this was their first time ever in DC. Yet another Pixies  or Modest Mouse show would shake the whole place loose. I never thought I'd say this, but i agree with Rhett, this board has gotten way too Pitchforked...

I tried to escape. They opened throttle in pursuit with amphibious helicopters, talking cars, and TV fanfares. I said that music with so many antecedents couldn't possibly sound this refreshingly original. They poured chocolate milk on a bowl of Froot Loops, turned up the Saturday morning cartoons, and thwacked me over the head with an army of crime-fighter trumpets-- taunting me all the while with old-school rhymes, cheerleader chants, and old Jackson 5 melodies. I accused them of not playing their own instruments-- only sample-based party-favors like The Avalanches or Rjd2 could hopscotch genre so capriciously! Ian Parton punched me with piano keys and gelded me with guitar chords before plunging a recorder through my windpipe. A rainbow appeared in the sky, a dance party broke out in Brooklyn, and someone handed me a lollipop. I never drank Mountain Dew after midnight again. --Marc Hogan

I'm a bit surprised people weren't more excited about the Go! Team show.  Then again, you can count me in as one of those not-so-excited folks.

They have a very bizarre sound that I wasn't really sure they could pull-off live.  It sounds like I was wrong, but it wasn't a far-fetched assumption at all.  That made me a bit hesitant to pay-up and head out on a Sunday night.  That's what prompted my earlier comment about Medications. Had I known they were playing, I wouldn't have really cared how good The Go! Team were.  I knew it would be worth my money and time.

Then there's the fact that March is just an insanely busy concert month.  My calendar currently lists 11 shows over the next 2 weeks. 5 of them are definites. The rest depend on how tired I am.  No matter how hard I try, I have to pick and choose.  It's not that I'm not interested in discovering new music, but sometimes I prefer to stick to a sure-thing.
