hah ... that point was really insignificant to the rest of the piece, i was just really suprised to put the bloc party CD in and hear a jimmy eat world song ... i've listened to it a few more times (track 10, "so here we are") and it's definitely it ...

but it really has no larger relevance than a "subtle reference" in a 200 word review

I can't really think of a song on Silent Alarm that sounds like a direct rip off of When I Argue I See Shapes, but every new band sounds a little like some old band or another.  In my opinion, the Idlewild song isn't all that original either.  That's why I liked them in the first place, they had that post punk sound when everyone else was trying to sound like Oasis and Blur.

Sorry, "Silent Alarm" has been on repeat in the old 'pod for quite some time. Don't hear any Jimmy Eat World. "So Here We Are" in particular: The drumming is just way too good to be compared to anything by Jimmy Eat World.

Kosmo, as a closeted Jimmy Eat World fan (and i'm guessing an owner of "Clarity"), you want to weigh in here?

i dont think they really sound like Franz Ferdinand or the Killers.

and i dont think Franz Ferdinand sound like the Killers?  why do people try to homogenize everything?

Funny, I heard more British influences like James or a even Cure sensibility (something in the lead singer's voice).  American emo never crossed my mind even when seeing them live.

assuming your article comes out after 3/22?
I'm w/ sonick and others...don't hear any of the aforementioned references.

im assuming it comes out before/around 3/22, but i'm not the judge of that.

i also think its incredibly legitimate to tie bloc party to other 80s influenced indie dance-rock bands right now ... sure they don't sound spot on to franz or the killers, mainly because bloc party has a much more diverse sound than either of these two ... but their "dance" tracks have a similar vibe, the main riff in "banquet" is very franz

and i guess we'll just have to agree to disagree about "so here we are", but to my ears it sounds like an outtake from JEW's "Clarity" (which is a very different album from "Bleed American", for all you haters out there)

ok got a chance to hear "So We Are Here" and will have to say it could fit in on JEW's Clarity.  The ringing guitars and frantic drumming do remind of some of that record.  I do also hear the Cure & James in the vocals for this song.

For me there are moments on both Clarity and Bleed American which are great.

plus, i suppose thats what writers have to do is relate one band to as many others as possible.

you gotta spoon feed the people. plus, its easier to describe someone sound by saying "they sound like ___"

   oh well.

the 3/22 US release date is correct. Using the verb in past tense I was questioning...sorry had to put on the editor cap...
No one said anything bad about Jimmy Eat World. Stick to what you think and hear - no need to justify...

It's more than just listing similar sounding bands.  I think it's quite clear that Bloc Party is part of this recent and quite prolific music trend of 2004/2005 towards the dance rock early 80s ilk.

i'll always write what i feel and this discussion i started wasn't to make myself feel justified, i simply enjoy hashing things out with people.

my thoughts on why one might disagree with me:

 a) you haven't heard clarity
 b) you're protective enough to keep the dreaded emo tag from a band you like
 c) you're afraid that if you like the track, you too may like jimmy eat world
