Perhaps the most misappropriately named beer I've had in awhile, Trinity Red Swingline IPA is actually a golden colored American Wild Ale, with zero hoppiness. Whatever, it was awesome sour greatness. Wish I had bought more when I was in Colorado last year.

Considering it... I have a good friend's 40th that evening + would like to hit BtS at the club, so could be the recipe for a very, very long day. So most likely, not...

Here's what Smackie is serving at his reception:

Deschutes Porter
10 Barrel Joe IPA

Those aren't for me ggw, those are for the people...

I'm having Mumm Brut Prestige, Justin Cab, Unti Barbera, Sonoma-Cutrer Chard, and Bancrott Suav Blanc.

And then Venerable or Godsshoeshine or the Director will bring me Macallan 18 at around 10:30, with a Death Star Ice Cube.

WAIT

I don't think any other DJ on the planet, save for maybe Kosmo, would take on the task of DJing my wedding...

I'm no beer awards expert, but my guess is winning something at this festival is equivalent to winning a Grammy.

Devil's Backbone won the same award back in 2013. Another "meh" Virginia brewery, imo.

I remember posting something to that effect on a Beer Advocate forum, and I was crucified for saying it.

that's not a bad analogy.

beer competitions about brewing to style.  looking at the categories port city won in (pasted below), those probably aren't exciting styles to you but port city does brew solid examples of those styles as defined by-the-book.  that'll win you competitions.  imperial IPAs and sours are much more exciting styles, but unless such someone wins 3+ medals for them breweries like port city are going to be crowned.  if it's any consolation, firestone walker won for mid-sized, and rip current for very small brewery.  i believe they meet with your approval.

Medal    Beer Name   Brewery   City   State   Category   Year
Silver:
Monumental IPA   Port City Brewing Co.   Alexandria   VA   English-Style India Pale Ale   2015
Bronze:
Optimal Wit   Port City Brewing Co.   Alexandria   VA   Belgian-Style Witbier   2015
Silver:
Porter   Port City Brewing Co.   Alexandria   VA   Robust Porter   2015

Woohoo. Jai Alai apparently making its return to NoVA after being absent for a year straight.

Also, the witbier and the porter at Port City are pretty solid. The IPA is pretty terrible (78 on Beer Advocate, 51/29 on Ratebeer). Still don't see how they are the "best small brewery". Whatever!

I am, a sucker, for suggestive commercialization . . . so I bought this for the bottle, but it turns out to be good.
