current word on the street is that it's a no-go, given the cost.  things could change.

i really really hope i can make it to brazil in 2014

yup, i'm hoping the same.  the missus has spent time in brazil and speaks fluent portuguese.  she would be my guide and hopefully sweet-talk my way out of bar fights with the locals.  we contemplated south africa but the security concerns, and other financial priorities, got in the way.  having already traveled around brazil we're comfortable with it.  my one trip to south africa left me a little concerned about kicking around the country.

I will be in Brazil as I have many friends in Sao Paolo.

The fanfest things are fun - we were looking for these in Europe and have found one only in Berlin, so we're going there.  I hope for your guys sake, they do one in Dupont Circle.  SF is doing two - one outside City Hall (USA v England) and one in Dolores Park (for the final).

And this is awesome:

BTW - with Essien out, I'm pretty certain now that not a single African team will make it out of the first round.  I suppose Cote d'Ivoire has a chance if Portugal continues to struggle, but I think it's a distinct possibility.

I'm hoping it is Cote d'Ivoire as well over Portugal, but I think it's Cameroon that will advance out of the African countries.

Maybe the DC Sports Commission will show the game at RFK like they did for the 2002 quarterfinals. Granted , its first round play, but still, would be fun and the stadium, fromw what I can tell, isn't being used that day by another event.

rio will be more fun than sao paolo.

my only minor issue with fanfests is that depending on the location, drinking may be prohibited.  yes, i'd rather have a fun atmosphere than drink beer alone, but the best is a fun atmosphere and beer.

BTW - with Essien out, I'm pretty certain now that not a single African team will make it out of the first round.  I suppose Cote d'Ivoire has a chance if Portugal continues to struggle, but I think it's a distinct possibility.

wow, that would really suck for the continent if that happens.  what with this being labelled "africa's cup", expectations are sky-high for the six african teams.  lots of soul-searching would ensue.

I think Cameroon is Africa's best hope to go through, not Cote d'Ivoire.

Rio is for tourists.

The only fanfests I've been to were in Europe.  There are no prohibitions on alcohol in Europe during the World Cup.  Except staying sober - that's prohibited.  SF might enforce no drinking by city hall, but not at Delores Park.

yes, tourists go to rio because it's an interesting place to visit.  sao paulo is the business capital of brazil, rio is party central.  i'll be going to brazil to party.

that being said, the missus spent most of her time studying in SP so she's got a soft spot for the city.

also, if we're all going to visit the city, we should learn how to spell it ;)
