I say this as someone who has positively reviewed my first three shows of the year....all good to excellent..but the Beth Orton show was so bad. A train wreck to me.
She kept saying it was "International Women's Day," but she was off by a week (Didn't she know that it was actually Combatting Islamaphobia Day?) She scolded the band for playing too slowly, stopping mid-song (did that twice) to start over, telling them it's International Women's Day and they need to play faster. Her once pretty voice is now a croaky Marianne Faithful-like voice that can't hit any of the high notes. Her 90's albums were clearly her career highlights (for me anyway, probably the same for many others?) but she chose to focus on the newer, more artier material that doesn't translate well live.
My kid's first comment was "Everything But the Voice," which meant she thought the music was good, but the singing was completely off. My wife was less charitable, saying "She just needs to retire."
Anybody else go?
