how early to iota for a show?
« on: January 15, 2004, 01:18:00 pm »
peeps, i've been iota a few times, but it was to see artists that clearly were not going to be a big draw, plus it was during the week. the thrills are there tommorow and i'm thinking it will be a big draw. what time should i get there? right at 9.30? 10? 11?

 is anyone going tommorow?

ha, ha - I would get there early - they had a big spread on that free newspaper you get at the metro station today and generally are getting a fair bit of 'buzz' - I have to say I bought the album when I was home in Dublin in August and have really tried to like it but it just comes over as a little forced

I've always maintained that, even kind of popular shows, rarely sold out before 10, 9:30 at the earliest.  HOWEVER, on a recent weeknight, Evan Dando sold out by 8:30.  Some things to consider -- he's appealing to the Whitlows/Clarendon Grill crowd in their late 20s who remember him from high school or college days (when most people were exposed to slightly alternative music), and the Thrills are a newer, more under the radar band.

But here's my recommendation.  If it's important for you to see the band, get there early -- by 9:00.  You can eat in the restaurant, or just have drinks over there with an app.  It assures you'll get in, and you can hang with your friends and talk before the music starts.  When I really want to see a band, I get to the restaurant and have dinner around 8:00.  They come through and let you pay the cover for the show, so you definitely are 'in.'

i don't know much about the thrills, but if they are getting mainstream radio airplay, show up around 8.

If you're smart you'll do what I do.....call and ask what time for sure the band you want to see is hitting the stage and ask them what the crowd is like at the time........always willing and able to give you the heads up.....

Always better for both parties to SIT on the pole, not STAND on it.

Of course, I'm talking NASCAR here, and nothing else.

Snag is, especially with a band that hasn't played there before, the club won't know how popular the show ends up being.  They told the folks in front of me at Evan Dando to get "early," as in by 9 or 9:30.  And if it's a popular show, doesn't matter when the band goes on.  Be there by 9:00.
