Rockies extend Nolan Arenado for 8 years, $260m, opt out after 3 years (in his age 30 season) and full no trade clause.

The Dodgers really wanted him, and might impact their Harper strategy, which to this point was the one year fallback.

EDIT:  The $32.5m AAV puts the starting bids for Harper at $325m for 10 years.

I will be interested to see our resident General Manager’s analysis but on the face of it I don’t find it that impressive..

He got the most money but 'only' $25M annually.  And no opt out.  But he'll make a great DH for them in his 30's when he starts to break down.  Not to mention he'll hit a million homers in that park in 13 years.

I really don’t understand why he took that deal instead of 300 over 10 from the Nats unless he just hated being in DC.

Well maybe he thought he could do better testing free agency than he did and by the time he doubled back Nats offer no longer stood

But I do think there were issues between Bryce and Nats

Maybe offer was never that firm

Sorry -  I'm in Houston at the moment and promised Hoya he would be the first to know so he could buy tickets for the home stand, before they sky rocketed.  Still not sure if he plays left or right with McCutchen playing the opposite.

13 years...wow.

This is interesting.  13 years at $30m would have been insane - but they didn't do that.  Machado probably got a better deal, and is a candidate to make $30m over 3 years in his age 36-39 season as a DH in the AL.  Machado has a chance to out earn this contract over 13 years, provided his knees stay healthy.

It was quite clear that Harper and Boras wanted one thing - to sign the highest contract amount ever, even if that meant lesser Annual Average Value than a contract signed, say, just last week! (Machado is $30m AAV, Harper only $25.4m).

He got the most money but 'only' $25M annually.  And no opt out.  But he'll make a great DH for them in his 30's when he starts to break down.  Not to mention he'll hit a million homers in that park in 13 years.

There is not a DH in the NL which is why I think the 13 year deal is crazy for an NL team that provided him a full no trade clause.  However, not that crazy, as the AAV makes luxury tax sense for the team in the future.  Will he be Albert Pujols in 10 years?  Absolutely, and they won't be able to DH him.  But his luxury tax hit will be small.

I really don’t understand why he took that deal instead of 300 over 10 from the Nats unless he just hated being in DC.

Because $300m is not the largest contract amount ever signed for.  We're dealing with ego here from both agent and player, and it had to be more than $325m.  I'm just surprised he signed for such a low AAV.

Also, Great news for Angels fans, now that the Phillies are likely out, and for Trout, who stands to earn a fortune (his WAR is higher than Harper and Machado, combined).

With the the CBA up for renewal, your move Arte Moreno, to get the deal done.  I'm off to Phoenix tomorrow to tell him myself.

Can they give Trout a piece of ownership?

Is that legal?

While the Giants offer was easy to walk away from (12 years, $310m) the Dodgers offer was not:

4 years, $180m.  I probably would have taken that, but Boras probably wouldn't let him.

I think there will be a DH in the NL by the time Harper is 30.

Contract breakdown for Bryce Harper's deal with the Philadelphia Phillies, sources tell ESPN:

2019: $10M (plus $20M signing bonus)
2020: $26M
2021: $26M
2022: $26M
2023: $26M
2024: $26M
2025: $26M
2026: $26M
2027: $26M
2028: $26M
2029: $22M
2030: $22M
2031: $22M

This is actually not really that stupid of a contract by the Phillies. What's the tax going to be in 2030? 22mil is going to be, like, 14 mil today.
