I had occasion to be in Space Freely's home Giant this weekend (Hollies - Long Cool Woman) and I was struck by the clarity of their audio system. I find most grocery stores have crappy systems that one must struggle to hear. But Space's Giant clearly values the customer experience and have engineered a system to ensure that you hear your shopping soundtrack consistently from the produce section all the way to frozen foods.

who would have thought this thread would have legs...dominating the top spot for some time now
maybe Julie can come up with a "integers I saw while at the Grocery Store" companion thread

This begs the question, who makes the call on music selection?
Do we think it's locally sourced?
What about royalties...as surely the stores are profiting from artists blood, sweat and tears?
Is someone's full time job to DJ?
Or is it listed as the Assistant Managers responsibilities and no extra fee is paid?
Who is the audience?... do internal staff want something to listen whilst they polish the apples?
Or does the manager say "we need to create an atmosphere of a hipsters basement soundtrack"

Or is there a station on Spotify/Pandora/Musaqic

the store manager should review this
https://cloudcovermusic.com/blog/licensing-questions-legal-business-music/
If you do not receive the proper authorization you can be held liable for damages from a minimum of $750 up to a maximum of $150,000 per song played.

InStore Audio Network (also known as ISAN) is a retail media provider of narrowcast in-store background music, in-store video content and advertising for delivery within supermarkets and drugstores. InStore Broadcasting Network's music programming is housed locally on a music server at each location, containing the music library and IBN's proprietary scheduling and delivery software. This software enables each server to receive new ads and playlists as often as necessary, transferred over the Internet. The playlists dictate what will be played during the following week in that particular store.

ISAN reports that it provides music to over 22,000 retail and grocery stores in the United States. Its largest client base holds nationwide accounts. Included are stores owned by Ahold (including Giant Food Stores, Tops and Martin's), Kroger, Safeway, Rite Aid, Supervalu, Meijer, Winn-Dixie and Walgreens.[

I do only shop at bespoke farm-to-table grocery stores that round off all item prices to whole numbers so this is totally in play.

Today is my telework day. I will be shopping after I sign out later. I'll report my findings later, though this time of year it's usually lots of Xmas music.

My wife seems to think that the purpose of me teleworking is for me to get housework and errands done while I'm supposed to be working, but I disagree.

Get a “permission slip” from your employer saying you are not authorized to do housework while teleworking

Problem solved

I think the only non-Xmas song I heard at either Giant or Whole Foods yesterday was  fat turd John Belushi singing Soul Man. Or at least I think it was the JB version. That's a song that I don't think anybody could make a good version of.

So I'm going to go with...none.

This weekend I'm planning a rare stop at TJ's. Maybe they'll have something.
