trying to take a deep breathe, but it's going to be many many instances of my blood boiling... today's it seeing RFK's lawyer wanting to the FDA to revoke the approval of the Polio Vaccine.. it's good thing we have such a great health care system... oh wait... nevermind.
All joking aside, I have gotten 8 vaccines updated in the last 2 months just in case shenanigans ensue. If I could find a doctor willing to give me the shingles one before age 50, I'd make it 9.

actually minor mea culpa because that NYT article was paywalled I didn't see the salient fact that this was past deplorable behavior by said lawyer, but there are indications that ratfuckery could still be afoot

here is a cat picture to atone for my rant...

It’s amazing how often I find your takes completely wrong. It’s like you just post whatever you want to believe facts be damned. Being the head of VOA is a better prize than Ambassador to México.

well, at least we share one thing in common: it’s amazing how often I find your takes completely wrong, too!

in this case, i truly believe that ambassador to MX >>> head of VOA: trump doesn't care about VOA.  she will get zero percent of trump's attention there.  she will not have the ability to barge into the oval office with her concerns.  leading the VOA puts her in the outter circle of trump's orbit with limited opportunities to get face-time with the prez.  maybe she'll get invited to the christmas party.

on the other hand, immigration and the border were central themes in trump's campaign.  he's already talking about tariffs on mexican imports,  starting mass deportation, investing in border security, sending the US military into mexico to fight the cartels, mexico is now the US's #1 trading partner, etc - all things that have a big chunk of trump's mindshare.  the mexican ambassador, while not central to the decision-making process on these topics, will be part of the conversation.  there will plenty of direct communication between the embassy in mexico city and the oval office & state dept.  it will have more visibility to both trump and the public than the VOA.

i truly believe that kari lake would much rather be trump's woman in MX, vs. running a propaganda mouthpiece that trump won't think about.

At VOA you oversee about 1000 employees and a budget of $270 million.

this is attractive only if you have traditional career aspirations (i.e. you or i would probably prefer VOA over an ambassadorship).  kari lake wants power, not experience running a large organization.  she has political aspirations, and "former head of the VOA" doesn't bring clout.  an ambassadorship to the US's #1 trading partner ranks higher.  not drastically higher, but still higher.  also, it comes with a life-long title.  the power-hungry love titles.

Oh and for someone with political ambitions being in DC is so much better than Mexico City….

agreed (!), but even more important for maga sycophants is getting time with trump, which, oddly enough, will be easier to do from MX than from down the street in DC.

well who’s kidding who? for anyone really…

i've been to mexico the country several times but never mexico the city.  developing world megapolises don't really interest me, and based on what i've read el distrito federal is falling apart in several different ways...

Yeah except your takes are always wrong. Harris cruised to victory and the Ukraine defeated Russia…

You are obviously well informed, successful and intelligent but you suffer from a common affliction of liberals: you conflate what you wish to be true for what is true.

Hey this is good news

North Carolina’s Atrium Health says it will forgive the debts of 11,500 people — less than a week after NBC News reported that the company has aggressively pursued former patients’ medical debts, placing liens on their homes to collect on bills.

One good thing I heard… the DOGE team is looking to put daylight savings on the chopping block and no one will need to lose a job over it

Omg… the funniest response yet to this

@atrupar
Did standard time donate a million bucks to Trump’s inauguration or what’s going on here?

Oh and I would argue that the head of the VOA is a way harder job than eating caviar and sipping don by the magnum
Even if it was in Greece, I would not take it

Yeah except your takes are always wrong.

yet another thing we have in common: i also believe that your takes are always wrong!  (not really, see below...)

Harris cruised to victory and the Ukraine defeated Russia…

yup, my confidence in harris didn't pan out.  it's called politics.

ukraine has not yet defeated the ruzzia, more time is needed for the ruzzia's economy to collapse.  regardless, this hasn't been settled either way.

you conflate what you wish to be true for what is true.

please re-read what i wrote: i used words like "i truly believe...", which indicates an opinion.  there is no right or wrong here, and we cannot know what is true.  until we get an answer from kari lake herself, it's pure conjecture on our parts.

i laid out why i think MX > VOA, you shared why you think MX < VOA.  it's called a debate... an exchange of ideas, if you will.  you suffer from a common affliction of conservatives: inability to be challenged, and confusion of debate with attack.

Murder is murder. If people took vigilantism up  en masse that would be the end of the rule of law and we would revert to a Hobbesian nature.

The answer is to regulate health insurance providers better. The answer is not to start killing CEOs on the street. This young man was clearly a very very disturbed individual.

Some good may come from his actions- or not - but that doesn’t make it right. The end does not justify the means.

Vigilantism is a very slippery slope.

Can I think of cases where vigilantism is justified and where you must live outside the law? Yes, extreme cases but in retrospect. And the threshold is very high.

Pure balderdash

You made the claim that heading the VOA would be risible. Heading an organization with 1000 employees and a $270 million budget is no joke. Your point was that it was a pathetic job.

You didn’t make the case Kari Lake would like being Ambassador more. That’s not what we are talking about. Sidehatch came in with his usual salient analysis and made the case he would like being Ambassador more.

I have no idea if she will even be offered this but I think your point that it’s such a lame offering just doesn’t stand on the merits. I mean it’s not a cabinet position but it’s a good position.

What the hell is happening in this thread? Hutch, how did you get this spicy? I declared a pax 930ia like two years ago because of my semi-retirement as instigator on here and now you’re stirring up this shit?

Disagree agreeable, please. The ad hominem is unnecessary.

Sweets, you too.

Geez I called him smart, successful and informed. Doesn’t seem all bad…

When someone consistently makes grand pronouncements that strain credulity -and following a spate of real stinker predictions - it’s annoying and I have to call it out.

Like take a step back you know? Maybe you don’t have all the answers like you think?

And no, debating the merits of heading the VOA versus being ambassador to México doesn’t excite me but when you say managing 1000 people and $270 million is a shit position yeah I gotta chime in. Like I get it he just wants to put her down but at least be attuned to reality.

Honestly it’s getting really stale here.

Please tell me more about the skills needed to be an ambassador?

Donald Trump picks Herschel Walker as U.S. Ambassador to the Bahamas.
