I'm sure there's more than one.

Ahh I remember when ProTools was only a 4 track system!  :)   What are you looking into?

the m-box 2 bundle.

interface (2 I/O's, DI & MIDI inputs as well), ProTools 7.0 LE, a bunch of additional little throw-ins (bomb factory software w/ instrument sounds, compressor settings, gates, etc yadda yadda).

and then a 80-gig firewire harddrive to motor it (on my laptop).

i know i can spend a little more and get the rack w/ 8 I/O's... but i'm looking more to just practice my chops on pro tools than have a "real" home studio set-up.

The bundle idea is good. The real factor is your laptop setup that's going to really determine how well it work. How fast is that 80GB hard drive? (opt. performance would be at least 7200RPM drive)  How much RAM is in the laptop and what processor?

yep, 7200 rpm

my laptop is 2.3ghz/intel4 processor. 512mb of ram. not monstrous, but i probably won't be tracking any orchestras anytime soon.

i can always take it easy on the machine and not put it in "follow insertion cursor during playback" mode?

As long as you're only running the ProTools and have all other apps closed, 512MB should be enough. If you start noticing issues, then the RAM would be the first to get upgraded.

I think you're ready to rock and or roll  ;)

You'll be fine with 512; I run ProTools on the MBox 1 package and it works out great.  Granted, its a Mac rig, but you shouldn't have any issues.
