Thanks for your assessment. To me they sound more like Built to Spill than Shins or MMJ, but I don't know you came up with those bands...maybe reading too much of pitchforkmedia? (surprise, surprise). Who cares if it's derivative? Isn't MMJ a derivative of...Neil Young and Crazy Horse??!

speaking of SF venues, how are DNA Lounge and the Mezzanine?

Only been to Mezzanine and it's one of the worst I've ever been to. Expect the headliner to go on around 11:30 or midnite on a WEEKDAY!
