Maybe that's the feeling among most people, but among the more hardcore REM fans, there's a huge divide over the post-Hi-Fi stuff.  They either think it's wonderful, experimental music for the new century...or they think it's a bunch of self-indulgent, boring, listless crap and think REM should get off their asses and get back to their rock 'n' roll roots.

Last night's show was excellent.  I've seen Phil's post-Dead band a couple of times, but I hadn't seen Bobby's until last night.  Very pleasantly surprised.

Toots was, of course, masterful as always.  He will be on SNL with Donald Trump this Saturday.

Really, I find that fascinating...I just find the new stuff kind of boring, overly mellow, etc.  But, because of that I have paid littel attention to it.  Their last album is the first of theirs I didn't buy, but I don't listen much to albums after Green (I listen almost exclusively to Murmur, Reckoning and Fables, in fact...)

I myself believe that Life's Rich Pageant is the best REM you can get.  Yes, I hate them for their new stuff.  I hate that you have to pay $50 to hear them play three good old songs and a boatload of drivel.  I hate that they moved to NYC/Seattle.  I especially hate Michael's self-righteous ranting.  I mean, I agree with his politics, but his music was better when he wasn't political, you know?!

REM's quality is directly proportional to release date.  Chronic Town was brilliant and it's pretty much straight downhill from there, with Green being the last album worth listening to.

Stipe was best when he was cryptical and mumbling.  The more clear his lyrics became, the more loathsome he became.

Actually, I find the lyrics of "I Believe" to be quite poetic and beautiful... then again, i'm an activist type, so...

Good to hear.  I'm really looking forward to it.  After the crappy week I've had, I need a good night of dancin' to cheer me up a bit.

I'm interested to find out what you think. You seem to be open minded so not like some other board members who just put them down because the old bloke of the board loves them.

It's all in the lyrics, he's a genius of a songwriter with typical English wit and sarcasm, which has probably been a part of the reason why they don't hit the bigtime this side of the Atlantic like at home....most doodles just won't get the point of the songs, which is understandable.

Merzbow. You either can't get enough (check out the  Merzbox ) or you turn it off in milliseconds.

Just download something of his and try it. You'll see.
