We talked about it a little more and you know, John??s always developing new ideas, like four or five at a time, there??s a whole bunch of areas he can move into, even now. So, I was happy to be loosely associated with this idea for a film and I was going to write some songs for it and then John was looking for an Eastern European piano player/singer/actress. I said, ??Well I know a girl.?

He was looking for a 35 year old, because she was supposed to be much older than the guy and she was you know, supposed to be a force of positivity in his life and I knew Mar [Markéta Irglová],   I've know Mar for years  so I just suggested that John might want to meet her, because she??s really talented and I have no doubt that if John had cast her for the role, she would have been lovely.

I suggested they meet. They met up and they just hit it off straight away and Mar got cast, so that was it.

I don't mind a bit of piss-taking as you know, but you lost me with your "revisionist" comment.

 Clue me in please.

I was just joking, giving YOU the credit for "revising" history, when it's this Glen schlub who is the one doing it.

Apparently, they knew each other musically and socially from when she was a child, but the relationship didn't blossom into a romantic one until she was of age, or nearly of age (she 20 years his junior, regardless).

Or so he would have you believe.

It sounded as if you were regurgitating his (revisionist?) version of the story. I was jokingly giving you the credit for beiing the revisionist.

didnt know there was such an age difference, really? they look around the same age - no more than just a few years apart.

NYT:

At the Hungry Cat, a fish restaurant, the two discussed how they met in Ms. Irglova??s hometown. In 2001, her father helped book the Frames for a local music festival, and her parents were hosts for a preconcert party. At the concert, as a thank you for the party, Mr. Hansard pulled Ms. Irglova, 13, onto the stage to sing.
EW:

The chemistry between his two leads ?? Glen Hansard, frontman for the Irish rock band the Frames, and Markéta Irglová, a Czech musician and acting novice ?? was easy to produce during the January 2006 shoot in Dublin. ''I had been falling in love with her for a long time, but I kept telling myself she's just a kid,'' says Hansard, 37, who has known his 19-year-old costar for the past six years. (The two are now dating.) ''There was definitely the feeling we were documenting something precious and private.''

Right, they met when she was a kid, which does add an odd feeling of Chaplin or Woody Allen...yet, I'm igorning it because it'll just ruin the movie for me which was excellent.

An LA Times article quoted him saying that he acts younger and she's more mature, so their relationship works.
He continued he doesn't let the negative opinions get to him b/c this is who he wants to be committed.
He said they began their relationship while on tour for Once and the Sw. Season shows.
(the article was the day after the LA secret show at McCabe's, days before the Oscars.)

They were on my flight to Ireland this past spring. Their backs were to me in line and I thought they looked young and like the Swell Season. Turns out, they were...

There is more at Wikipedia regarding the casting. I can't get the link to work.
