Space being concerned about mangling the English language is such sweet irony.

It is apparently more important to protect the sanctity of the language than it is to respect other people's identity. I didn't realize Space has been such a lifelong hardcore prescriptivist. I bet he bristles whenever the OED releases their "new words of the year" list.

I thought I was gonna make a snarky remark about "adulting" not being in The OED (as in "thankfully,..."), but it is! It dates back just over 100 years.

1909 intransitive verb. To become, be, or behave as an adult; (now) esp. to carry out the mundane or everyday tasks that are a necessary part of adult life…

1921 noun. The action or process of becoming, being, or behaving as an adult; (now) esp. the carrying out of the mundane or everyday tasks that are a necessary…

(But don't tell Windows, which just put a red squiggle under the word)

While the English language does not have a unique gender-neutral third-person singular pronoun, they has been used to identify singular persons in speech, popular literature, and dictionary reference materials since at least the 12th century. In fact, singular use of  they has been officially recognized as correct  by several key bodies such as the Associated Press, American Psychological Association (APA)  and Modern Language Association (MLA), the Oxford English Dictionary, and the Merriam-Webster Dictionary.
