The truth is that we're just splitting hairs here.
My opinion of Robocop 2 isn't germaine to the discourse.

Posting that SITH wasn't boring, as you claim, is.

To me, this is the lamest of all possible criticisms of the prequels.  Does no one remember "I don't know where you get your delusions, laser brain?"  How about "I'd just as soon kiss a Wookie" or "But I was going into Toshi Station to pick up some power converters?"  Jesus, what about the entire dialogue between Han & Leia on Endor after Luke reveals that they're family?

People, it's a STAR WARS MOVIE!  This isn't high art, and from a guy with a closet full of Star Wars toys, that's saying a lot.

Anyway, I was impressed with the ROTS.  While I can definitely see Ellis's points regarding AOTC being better, I thought he was able to do more in this movie than in the other two prequels combined; provided a reasonably solid progression of events for how Vader came into being.  Granted, Lucas was a little heavy-handed at times with the political side of things, but a republic doesn't just fall because one good guy goes goes bad.

Still, I'm hoping the DVD has more footage of the Wookies ripping up droids and more Jedi slaughter.  And I'm sure I'll get that, when Lucas releases the ninth revision of the original trilogy, packaged with the third revision of the prequel trilogy, all in a seven disc set just in time for Christmas 2008.

Give Lucas his due.  He did make a masterpiece, THX-1138.  What a film!  I just wish they would release the original version to DVD.  Lucas ought to be scolded for altering his earlier work, a'la A NEW BEGINNING.

Hey, I'm taking nothing away from Lucas at all.  I'm extremely biased, but I think all six episodes are great as a whole.  But he does have his limitations, and dialogue is one of them.

I haven't seen the re-released THX-1138.  What has he altered in it?  Mind you, it's been a while since I've seen it at all, so I might be a little hazy on the changes (unless they're drastic).

EDIT: Oops, just found this list.

I honestly dont remeber the original version too much, but the re-release had tons o' computer graffics added to it. Backgrounds, machines, more people, etc. I dont know if it changed the story at all, maybe someone with a better memory can tell us.

Think of it like this, Would Stanley Kubrick go back and colorize Dr.Strangelove?  Would he 3-D digitize the bomb bay scene and add extra elements to make it look cooler?

Would Hitchcock tinker with PSYCHO so that Janet Leigh doesn't have to die?  Would Sergei Eisenstein digitize a baby jogger onto the Odessa steps scene?

Lucas should have, at the very least, included an original cut.  A part of the stark atmosphere of the original was because of the low budget.

Kubrick, Hitchcock and Eisenstein are all dead.  So I would have to answer "no" to your questions.

Kubrick's not dead, man.  He's with Elvis.

Think of it like this, Was Dr. Strangelove an action picture with tons of special effects?

Star Wars was known for its FX and action sequences, which is why it makes some sense to update it ... it would make pretty much no sense to update the FX of a movie that didn't rely on FX in the first place

You think Slim Pickens was really riding on that missile?

Besides being greedy beyond belief, this is my only criticism of his tinkering.  The Star Wars DVDs should've had the option to watch the movie as the original cut, the Special Edition and the new edits.  Instead, he has to stick to his "original vision" and only include the new one.

By the end of my life (or Lucas's), I'm guessing I'll have 16 different versions of the Star Wars saga.

Just saw ROTS...it was okay.  What struck me is that Episode II is really given over to the love story between Anakin and Padame (or whatever the f*** her name is), and in this movie, there was no apparent love there at all, except they kept saying they were in love and couldn't live without each other.   But they barely touched each other and were so damn stiff....odd, really.  (Hmmm, wonder if this is largely a girl's perspective.)

Thing is, I liked the huge battles of some of the other movies -- Episode II kicked ass with some fights, even the forest chase in Episode XI -- which were missing her completely.  Instead we got numerous one-on-one confrontations.

And it's true -- R2D2 has the most personality in the movie!  The evil Chancellor was just a little too over the top with his "YAAA HAA HAA" evil laughing and sneers...
