ohmygod, that is SO not twirly!!  That is rock n' roll!!!  I told a friend, though, that the arm in the air is a sure sign the band's playing a song I know.

hey, i hear you, but what did you expect?  the guy's a jam band fan, it's not like his powers of deductive reasoning are finely honed like us rockers

Hypocrite, nah, thats not what I am at all.  Of course there are bad jam bands and poser jam bands, i'll be the first to admit it - just like there are bad indie bands, poser indie bands, and good indie bands, etc.  But unlike lots of you who haven't really ever given jam bands a fair shot (beyond listening to some phish or grateful dead) I've actually lsitened to them, been to the shows and really don't get into it, and I certainly didn't dismiss it in some sort of weird identity thing, like its against the cool kid code of ethics to like jam bands. If, like me, you've given them a chance, and if that's your story with jam bands, cool, they're not for everybody - just like all kinds of music. My post was meant to highlight the inordinate amount of immediate dismissal that many of you exhibit on this board whenever any jam band is brought up.

so if you don't go around to jam band shows and festivals so you can officially say you don't like jam bands, you're close-minded??  a "fair shot" means paying money to go to shows you know you won't enjoy?

 are you nuts?

-Jam bands definitely come to 9:30 regularly, but if your version of a jam band is State Radio or Dispatch, I guess you wouldn't care that real improvisational musicians like Keller Williams and Soulive are coming on the same weekend in November. STS9 plays here all the time (including a show in october), so does ratdog, particle, yonder mountain stribg band, and the disco biscuits played here like 12 times or something when they actually toured. -

Well thanks for the info... and for the record i love keller william, yonder, particle, stringcheese, all those bands alot... Hah, and i will lay of the heady nugz.. i dont smoke too much im a engineer major ne way( i need mah brain)

thanks for all the info once again peoples(wallawalla especially)

ps. i love ska too and i see that catch22 and the rxbandits are playin early august... well fortunately i get to see rx in my own area but im going to miss catch:(

I liked the venue and DJing, but wasn't really impressed with the live sound - especially during the Fannies, where it was far too bassy on the floor).  Is this a recurring problem or an isolated event? Is the sound generally better on the balcony?

I am also trying to locate the best CD stores in town. My wife and I had a list of 25 things and we were only able to find 6 or 7 of them after hitting a few places on Saturday. (My tastes are aging hipster - Big Takeover magazine-ish).  So far, Melody seems to have the most comprehensive indie selection but the prices were just ok. Crooked Best was pretty small but I noticed they had some good imports and a liked the atmosphere and help. Nothing else I have visted was very good.  I still haven't been to Tower.

So are there any other stores, especially good used discs stores in town, or should I stick with ordering from Parasol and Insound?

 Thanks for your help.
Sound is generally better on the floor as that is where the sound guy mixing the whole thing is located.  Often times there will be problems when a band starts as someone might have turned up the amp or bumped a knob or fader between sound check and the show.  Usually when the band starts, the guy out front is trying to be sure everything is happening and then correct for the smaller and smaller "flaws" in the sound.  So I usually concider the first song to be the sound check part 2.

Great Hipster has become demonized like Liberal.

What is so wrong to being "Hip" to new music.. I'm hip to plenty of new music that the indie rock snobs, jam fans, other forumites would turn their noses up at.

Along the likes of what Hoya said, some of the hipster "approved" bands that gain and then lose popularity, are in part because why should we pay money to be surrounded by a  bunch of rude people who came late to the party.  It great for the band to gain a wider fanbase, it sucks to a fan who is used to seeing them in more intimate settings.

I'll bet this board isn't as Hipster fested as you think.  There are as many Arcade Fire supporters as there are detractors...

But all that doesn't matter because we get called all sorts here...

So the implication is that the people who "came late to the party" are somehow more rude than hipsters?

I don't go to shows of bands i don't like, just like every sane person in the world.  But I don't make judgements on any kind of music because its hippy music, or black music, or country music, or whatever.  Maybe you just don't enjoy the music, or what they do live just doesn't appeal to you.  Again, that's fine.  But saying "it's fucking hippy music" or whatever the instant reply around here is when anyone asks what the setlist at a Ben Harper show is or posts a roll call for a jam band is at best immature and at worst idiotic.  Either way, its an inadequate critique of music.  I'm not saying you're necessarily the culprit, but all too often I see it here.  And the thread about poser jam bands is so illustrative of my point.  The same joke can be made about any genre of music, including whatever music you listen to.

And TheLastDispatch, the best place soundwise in the 9:30 club (other than VIP) is definitely front of house. The best place to watch a show though, is different, especially if people are dancin' and flailing.  I prefer about 1/3 of the way back from stage right on the main floor.  There's easy access to the bar/foodfood, as well as the best in/out access to your spot in the club (although if its sold out it's not easy to get in/out anywhere).

frankly, i think people are just trying to be funny ... it's not like this board is a haven for measured and responsible critiques of music

and lack of seriousness aside, you can't refer to this board as some kind of hegemonic force ... everyone on here has very different tastes, and i'd venture to say that we're pretty damn diverse

I've seen your ugly mug in that Penn State sweatshirt. Don't insult the poor hipsters of the world by referring to yourself as one.   :p

Wow...this is my point exactly. Not even engaging in a conversation, just using stereotypes. "You're probably too stoned" - Christ.  No, i'm not stoned.  I'm currently working at one one of my three jobs, one of which includes cleaning up messes left by you people at shows.

And I haven't heard "why don't you cry about it" since grade school.  It's fucking priceless.
