Division of Laura Lee/Burning Brides
« on: January 18, 2003, 12:36:00 pm »
Thank god Burning Brides were opening for DOLL, or I would have felt ripped off, even at $9. Burning Brides were great but I thought DOLL was AWFUL, left after 3 songs. How did Burning Brides end up on this tour?

Burning Brides were rawk-tastic. I thought they were really "on". Very heavy and metal set (although they didn't play the jadetree special "If I'm a Man") with lots of new stuff -- which hopefully augurs a soon-to-be-released second album.
I didn't stay for Division of Laura Lee. I picked up the album a couple of weeks ago, and while it's not bad, it just never struck a chord with me. Glad to hear I didn't miss anything.

I am glad you confirmed the new stuff, because I was thinking some of this must be new but I wasn't sure. I could not remember if they had any other released material other than empire. It definitely was a heavier set than last time, made up for not hearing I'm a Man.
[This message has been edited by jadetree (edited 01-18-2003).]

I hadn't heard either band before seeing DOLL/Brides last night. Burning Brides were a solid band. I was impressed by every song of theirs. The guitarist really wailed.
DOLL didn't impress me that much. They had a few good songs but after the Burning Brides, they didn't sound too great.

I think Division of Laura Lee were awful, left after 4-5 songs. As for Burning Brides, they were really good. Some great songs, very good musicians.

went to see BB, didn't stay for DOLL. BB rocked as usual. I can definitely count on them.

My impression of last night pretty much echoes everyone else's sentiments. I really wasn't bowled over by DOLL, but I did stay through the entire set. Did we miss anything by The Catheters being no-shows?

DOLL sounded bad last night. They were so damned much better when they played their private show for me in Baltimore back in Oct. The sound at that show was a million times better, the energy was incredibly high and they stayed in tune. It was NOT the same show by any means. Really, you would have liked that show. That night, they played with The Hiss and Haven with DOLL being the best of the 3. They even looked a million times better...except for Plummer's Crack...and there's not much you can do with him. A couple times, I thought that he was going to break out in ballet moves across the stage. Was actually hoping that he would, just for the humor of it.

Yeah, I didn't think it was a strong show. I had fun rocking out, but the songs sounded pretty similar, and the show didn't stick with me the next day. Short term pleasure, I guess, with no substance. Not sure why their stage presence was also lacking. I really wish The Catheters has been able to make it. Burning Brides were very good.

i wasn't totally impressed by DOLL, but granted i was only there through about 3 songs...but i was impressed enough to buy one of their tees (or perhaps only cos i liked the DOLL logo). i find it hard not to like a band that has someone in a cape introduce them...very intriguing i thought.

One more voice to choir. Burning Brides are such a great live act. I was especially struck at how good the bass player is. While the singer was doing his solos and kicks (which I'm not at all complaining about), she was holding down the tunes really well -- very solid playing. I like the drummer a lot too. And the singer sounds and looks great on stage. My only beef with them is the songs aren't there yet. I love the first song on the album (did they play it? I kept waiting for it but missed it somehow) and then I love each song progressively less.
DOLL was pretty disappointing. Nothing stood out about them, and after spending 2/3 of the show in the front part of the floor, I moved back and sat at the bar. As soon as they finished their main set, I was gone-ola.

I can agree about how amazing Burning Brides were, but am I not seeing something that you are because I thought that DOLL were pretty awesome. It was my first time seeing them, but I was pretty blown away. I was definitely disappointed that the Catheters didn't play, though...
