dupek was anonymous, right? so there's no real need to "erase his footprints" ... how the hell would his employers figure out it was him?

Maybe he used his work email to register for the board?

Or certainly they could have a log of websites visited, and if he was constantly at this site...

I once dated someone who worked in human resources at a company part of whose job it was to confront workers with evidence that they had been visiting inappropriate websites at work and consequently fire their asses.

i think the work email would really be the only way, and they'd really have to be digging ... i guess they could do some kind of a key-logging thing to see the name you were signing in with, and then painstakingly sift through this byzantine message board for his posts, but that seems highly unlikely

It's a good thing you want to be a lawyer and not an investigator, although even a lawyer would have to deduce these simple plot lines and make a story out of it....

 (1) Ever heard of an IP Address?

 (2) Maybe they know him and can relate facts he revealed about himself on this board, relate those with times the posts were made and prove that he posted often while at work?

 (3) Maybe they use internet monitoring software at his work?

I could go on and on....

if it mattered enough, i'm sure they could spend the time and figure it out, but it just seems improbable

This is Dupek we're talking about - is anything improbable?

Could you imagine that if someone were guilty of a wrongdoing, they might lie to cover their tracks?

Dupek posted messages at this board at all times during the day. he posted while at work unless he worked between midnight and 8am and never slept. Dial-up? then no surprise he was fired, he was online all day long, I guess the phone bill might have been very high.

Wasn't there a great moment in the history of this board when a moderator posted Rhett's IP address? Pretty easy to track it down I guess.

basically, if you leave footprints on the Internet, you can never completely erase it.   There's shit I posted on Usenet, before the web existed, and if you know what to look for you can find it on Google.  I've learned my lesson since.

Very true. That's why it's important to google yourself often, especially if there are folks with whom you share a name. There's another woman with my name who's an abstinence-education only believer and her names appears on right-leaning sites. Then there are a bunch of sites related to me because of my previous positions.

While interviewing for my current job, my now co-worker mentioned that he did an Internet search on me and even found a photo from a cocktail party I'd attended. Fortunately, I knew exactly which event and we discussed it before moving on to other issues.

Hoya, though I haven't noticed it here much, I have seen this happen a lot in other parts of cyberspace.

Regarding the job issue, Dupek was always sly enough not to leave anything too identifying so that a potential new employer would find him posting anything here unless it was with someone he knew from this board. In that case, I doubt it would be worth the trouble since they already knew him. So, kind of a mute point.

He's already told us that he was fired so why bother covering tracks if it's all a done deal, unless he is repealing his case and trying to be reinstated. If that's the case and his online life was part of his troubles, than that would make perfect sense. So, that's a possiblity.

As noted by others, he also told us that he doesn't surf at work. I know exactly what kind of job he did and know that people in those positions generally get very little computer access. Also, he worked in a field that does not operate on the typcial daytime clock schedules being a 24/7 service. Plus, these places tend to have alternating schedules so you can't easily figure out whether he was posting from home or at work unless you are tracking with software or knew his actual schedule.

With all of that said, I don't know the real reason he's erasing his cyber life but I am well familiar with the psychological implications of those who go back and destroy their creations, be they online, in diaries, or any creative pursuits. I'd rather not explain it publically any further since we are using it to refer to a real person. Besides, unless you love psychology like I do, it just gets boring.

Oh youd be surprised what some companies do upon terminating someone. I used to have the unfortunate fun of sifting through millions of emails looking for incriminating evidence that the former employees said about the company. It was painful, but the things that were written over email would make me laugh. And lots of it was personal. Im sure if I had more time, I'd have been going to message boards and doing the same thing. And yes, we even had to sue a former employee for an email that was sent regarding publishing of an article, while still working at the company. It can be ugly in the legal world.

Now if my company only knew how much time I spent online. Actually they do, but as long as the partners dont complain its all good. But even this huge lawfirm, uses anonymous names to post on message boards about  how great the firm is, esp. when a former employee says how bad it is. Crazy world in these lawfirms.
