Grails - Black Tar Prophecies

 Such a criminally overlooked band.

Their most recent album, Take Refuge in Clean Living is one of the best of the year, IMO. They aalso have another album due out in a couple weeks.

Oneida covering "Cold Rain and Snow" and "Cream Puff War" (Grateful Dead).

After seeing them a few weeks ago and then hearing this EP, I'm convinced that they're trying to gain entrance into jamband land. Why, I ask would a band with a respectable past such as theirs do this? I thought being labeled as "jamband" = the kiss of death nowadays.

I have been listening to Take Refuge In Clean Living quite a bit the past month.  The track Take Refuge sounds like some dark psychedelic spaghetti western.

The Streets - Everything is Borrowed

Pretty good so far. I just wish he wouldn't sing so much.

westerburg's concept was that it would be priced at a penny a minute

also someone surmises it got pulled due to the unauthorized samples and covers contained in that release...

there is also this mysterious track from him which is the mission time from the original 49:00 release.

Pas/Cal - I Was Raised on Matthew, Mark, Luke & Laura

I read somewhere this group was a Belle & Sebastien influenced group from Detroit and seeing as it's not exactly an epicenter for the twee, I was intrigued.

Well I hear the B&S comparison a better reference point might be De Novo Dahl, as there are some heavier psychedelic elements in their sound ala Super Furry Animals.  And being from Detroit, they occasionally set their guitars to stun...

Regardless, of what they sound like this is easily one of the best records I've heard all year.  Top ten all the way...  A good sign of a top notch record is when listening to it in order to figure out which tracks to choose for DJing, you realize there a several ones has marked with stars as being worthy.

excellent album, been enjoying it a lot lately. definitely has that second-phase b&s sound, a little new pornos, good sprightly pop that's not too cute for its own good.

what's weird is that it appears that the group has been disbanded since the end of 2006 and did very few performances outside of detroit... wonder what happens with this group now that the indie elitist snob buzz is being to build...

and i agree on the "not too cute for its own good" comment, as i was thinking the same thing... none of the tempo changes, extended songs sound forced or aren't we clever because we can.

been going through those "comprehensive music" threads and downloading stuff i've overlooked ...

 this is AWESOME, thanks bearman!
This is a great album.

Just be careful though and DO NOT buy the rerelease. A friend of mine figured out that it was pressed using MP3s. All the highs and lows are gone and it's thinner than the original release. Once this happened, Chapterhouse got wind of it and were pissed off. Since then, Cherry Red (the label) was supposed to make good on those who purchased the rerelease but no one (that I am aware of) has yet received their compensation. Glad I got an original copy before the rerelease.

Since then, Blood Music (which isn't quite as good) has been rereleased. Haven't heard the analysis on this one but I'm sure the band made sure everything was on the up and up after the first debacle.
