Well it’s usually true that tribute albums suck but there is a reason for them

Sometimes you love an act so much you want to pay tribute and expose others..maybe newer generations to the music that meant so much to you.. it wouldn’t be art if artists didn’t put their own spin on the songs...but that can be jarring for longtime fans of the original versions

Bob Dylan put together the excellent Jimmie Rodgers tribute for this reason..even put it out on his own record label... he certainly didn’t do it for the $!!!

This particular tribute is kind of weird...first of all the mp3 streaming version has like 26 songs! The CD 17 and the LP 12

The heavyweights are Puscifer whose Holiday on the moon seems to be the reason this record sold any copies.. TOOL fans

Then Black Francis, Dandy Warhols, Monster Magnet and Flaming Lips

Most of the rest seem like minor musicians -obscure-or people I don’t like

Much like Lift (final L & R) the record company that put this out either went under or is so inconsequential that the record went out of print long ago

I believe Daniel Ash had something to do with this tribute...

At first listen it seems fairly underwhelming although I have only heard the LP

I can’t help but be annoyed the record has so few songs and four of them on the 45... my guess is they were so tight for $ they couldn’t even make it a two LP set

This cover of Deacon Blues is one of the most painful covers I've heard.

Been absolutely loving the spattering of Bonnie Prince Billy and Callahan tunes over the last few weeks/months. The Callahan tune with Ty Segall which I think is the most recent release is awesome as well.

The Steve Earle tribute album to his son is quite nice.

Arguably finest album released in 1995.

The final studio album by Soda Stereo is my favorite by them...

The original CD release sounds amazing but I had to buy the reissue on LP which is surely just a straight digital transfer so no better. Unfortunately my copy has a flaw on side D.

Soda’s 1996 MTV Unplugged record is getting reissued next month (well, first time issue on vinyl)... maybe best MTV Unplugged performance?

These guys weren’t fooling around.

My favorite so called Brit pop band although the term Brit pop in this case seems stupid..they are straight up rock

Brit pop to me is more like Suede or Pulp (the best Brit pop band) not these guys or Oasis

The sound is just not very good on the CD.. imho

I have a signed LP somewhere
