i'm being made to read this classic, which i somehow missed in my youth:

 there is political commentary that is relevant today - one of the rabbit tribes ("warrens") is a paranoid bunch and is willing to put up with a despotic ruler... the message being that those ruled by fear are quickest to give up their rights.
