I found the article on the Fiery Furnaces to be one of the better -- maybe best -- on them, and I've read a lot.  After *finally* hearing them, the Express piece gets closest to objectively describing their overall sound/vibe.

chimbley-- i hear you, and no offense taken ... this probably isn't the best place to ask my question ... express' target audience is the avg. metro-rider-worker-drone, not well-educated music lovers ...
 
 i'd tend to think that the average person would gloss over or turn the page when they see a big article on a relatively obscure indie band like the fiery furnaces ...

Agreed.  Either they're interested or they're not.  Some people would probably think it's odd that I don't pore over the Business section.

my main problem with the Express is the guy handing them out stands right by the Metro steps and gets in your way as you're trying to get on the escalator.

I dunno...I think the Express fulfills a good niche...I don't know very much about the Fiery Furnaces, but I'd be more inclined to read about them as part of my 35 minute commute from the burbs than I would otherwise...I imagine there are other suburban commuters like me who are more likely to read about a band and go buy their cd than being part of the "indie" scene as an introduction to the band.

Its a while since I took the metro everyday.... But when I did I thought the music section in the express was quite impressive, it previewed some of the lesser known bands that were about to play, rather nicely.

And here's my complaint -- even though the Drive By Truckers is listed in the WashPost "entertainment" email and is an editor's pick, when you go to the Post site's entertainment page on the  DBTs, you get only club info, not the Express article.
 
 Ditto to  Fiery Furnaces; there you get the Post profile done a couple weeks ago, not today's good article from the Express.
