emo pet peeve
« on: September 23, 2004, 12:45:00 pm »
why do you never hear superchunk referred to as emo godfathers?

seems like rock journos have fallen into the habit (like the interpol/JD link) of harping on sunny day as the "evolutionary link" from dc hardcore to today's crop of emoters ...

btw, the acoustic version of "detroit has a skyline" is unreal.

i would say the fire theft is emo, mainly because they're just sunny day real estate redux ... they got a lotta prog in em too ...

but they're not like emo-crap like taking back sunday or my chemical romance ...

did anyone go to that show a while back at 930 where fire theft and grandaddy opened for (i think) taking back sunday? the place was packed for the two openers, then completely emptied out for TBS, only people left were maybe 50 high school kids in hoodies gathered around the stage ... i actually felt bad for the headliners....

The same thing happened when Dave Pirner played the club in 2002. Decent crowd for the opener (The Lost Trailers), maybe 20 people for Dave Pirner, which makes sense.

The Lost Trailers suck. And they aren't emo.

emo is such a weird category, who the fuck knows whats what, but jeremy enigk is pretty damn emotional ...

that album took me a few spins to get into, but man, it's powerful ... "it's over" is the best, i think ...

do you have the last two SDRE albums? they're both awesome and the most similar to fire theft...

The guy from Superchunk has one of those nasally voices best suited for country music. Singing rock music, he comes off sounding like an annoying wussy.

Sort of like one of my favorite country singers, the nasally voiced Robbie Fulks, when he tries to rock out.

I like him much more on his Portastatic releases, especially the last 2 (summer of the shark and autumn was a lark). He actually comes much closer to country on those (closer than superchunk, at least...except for their "foolish" album).
