Sometimes it's worth it to just pay a cab to take you to a place you've never been.  Then you will always know where it's at after that.

When you're walking up 18th street, look for Maggie Moo's, which is kind of hard to miss. It's bright pink with black and white cow walls outside. Crooked Beat is right before it, downstairs.

WMATA's Trip Planner doesn't help you?  It's one of the best features of the whole Metro system, great piece of software ... that, combined with the Station Masters maps, is about all you need

Hey.  I'm just, on occasion, "directionally challenged."  I'm used walking Los Angeles streets...everything there is a grid...

dc is a grid too!

numbered streets go north/south, lettered streets go east/west, and roads named after states go diaganol.

i have heard dc aptly described as a grid with a wagon wheel laid over it (or under it).

rock creek parkway is just fantastic ... i can go from my house in DC to national airport in 10 minutes while travelling on maybe 100 yds total of non-highway streets ... i don't understand why more people don't use it, and i also don't understand why google maps or mapquest or yahoo maps can't integrate it into their direction systems

Because it can be very confusing if you don't already know exactly where you're going.  Once you figure it out - it's great.
