First Half of 2003 In Review

Best Shows thus far this year?

 Best Albums thus far?

I'll have to ponder the albums category, but best shows go to Rollins Band and Paul Weller.

Best show a tie between Pernice Brothers and the most recent Slobberbone. Some people thought my performance with the mime was pretty good too.

Best album the Jayhawks with the Pernice Brothers a close second...though we've only bought a handful of 2003 releases

best shows  The Delgados and The Cynics

best album... have they released anything new worth listening to?  idlewild doesn't really count does it?  the new pronographers was a great download from emusic and the pernice brothers turned my head on first listens.

Absolutely, hands down best show - Rollins Band. Chills were going down my spine, it was so great.
And this is from someone who's seen thousands of bands in my life.

there have been a few good shows....

 Supergrass/the coral

 Delgados

 Cinerama

Idlewild (that was this year, right)

 as for releases...

that is harder they all seem to be last year.

best re-release was Take no prisoners the Lou Reed live album.

 Perhaps Tyde Twice

I am not sure about Dandy Warhols welcome to the monkeyhouse yet....

I've only heard one song, but they sound identical to The Strokes.

Wow,GGW, I usually agree with your musical assessments, but I don't hear this comparison at all.The Tyde use way more instrumentation  and effects and have more of a 60's vibe, whereas the Strokes are pretty  straight forward  garage  rock for the most part. What's anybody eles think about this comparison?

Well there is a strokeish element to blood brothers. I guess its partly due to the vocals.

And that is the best song on the album..... the rest of the album is mostly more flakey psychadelia in the brian Jonestown mould....

I did originally state that it reminded me of the Lloyd Cole BJM and the strokes.

Markie played me some of the Tyde. Sounded pretty decent. Didn't remind me of the Strokes.

How do y'all think the Tyde stacks up against Beachwood Sparks?

Like I said, I've only heard one song -- Blood Brothers -- and it's got the same vocal effects as The Strokes.  The first couple of times I heard the song, I thought perhaps The Strokes actually made a second album.

I'll track down the Tyde CD and give the whole thing a listen.

I would never guess that the Tyde and the beechwood sparks shared members....

the sparks are way twangy for my liking.

I think the first album, once is better than the second album, twice.....
