Anyone go to the show at Madison Square on NYE?
« on: January 12, 2005, 08:59:00 am »
How was it?  I hope the Flaming Lips didn't take a billion years setting up their crap and then only played 4 songs like they did at Coachella....

At the stroke of midnight, as the venue turned its eyes to the ball dropping in Times Square, Wilco became in the word of Tweedy ??a $50 bar band.? Further proving they can get away with whatever they want, Wilco delivered a series of cover songs ranging from Judas Priest (??Livin After Midnight??), Captain and Tennille (??Love Will Keep Us Together??), Randy Newman (??Political Science??), The Band (??I Shall Be Released??), Thunderclap Newman (??Something In The Air??) and even Blue Oyster Cult??s (??Don??t Fear The Reaper??) ?? complete with cowbell.

I have a copy of the show...email me at urbanpioneer at gmail dot com and we can work out a trade.  Solid recording and I have seen it posted on eTree and a few others...

I WOULD LOVE LOVE LOVE the Flaming Lips set from the same night...

taken all together, it was a very good show.  sleater-kinney was pretty fierce, but the live act of the flaming lips is hard to top.  i was confounded by wilco's opener, "less than you think" which (understandably) killed the mood.  the cover songs were great though, and i was pleased to hear 'theologians' and some YHF material right before midnight.

i really hope the winter wilco tour mixes up their setlists a little more...

my first time to NYC.  it was an amazing show.  short review:

doors opened at 7, wayne coyne was there at 7:30 throwing confetti into the crowd and talking to fans.  sleater-kinney went on right at 8, flaming lips went on around 9:15.  right on time.  the lips' set was incredible.. balloons everywhere when they opened with "race for the prize."  happy suns and furry animals dancing around onstage.. great visuals on the screen.. "in the morning of magicians" was the highlight of the night.

instead of salesmen walking around selling $7 cups of beer, there were salesmen walking round with trays of $8 cups of champagne.  $24 gone out of my wallet, but it was worth it.

wilco came on around 11 and played until 1.  at midnight, they showed the ball dropping on the big screen and their keyboardist played auld lang syne.  confetti everywhere.  they played a very upbeat set after midnight, playing 8(!) covers(!) total.  "jesus etc." was a highlight.  i was very happy to find a pretty good recording of wilco's set online, but unfortunately the lips' set hasn't surfaced.

Wow, that sounded like an excellent show. Was it a packed house? If one was in NYC, I can't see how you couldn't go to that concert.

Would've been tough to have had to choose between that show and the disco biscuits at hammerstein. Well for me at least.

That sounds awesome.  I'm really sad I missed the cowbell.  Now, it would've been really cool if Christopher Walken would've walked on stage and said "I've got a fever for some cowbell".

So glad to hear it was a good show!  Wish I could've gone to that one!
