There may be no purple line to Dulles?????
« on: January 27, 2008, 07:57:00 am »
Looks like the new line is gonna get shut down. I don't know if it is necessary right now as you can catch the bus to Dulles. What are your thoughts???? Anyone live in that area??????

This project will not affect me directly as I don't live out there, but I nearly always see value in mass transit.

However, I don't see how VA is going to pull a billion $$ out of its ass to save this project...

i 'live out there'

i would bet money that it will happen. they'll sell the toll road if needed. maybe that's the optimist in me. really, they need to do anything to make this happen

Am I an idiot?

Why don't they build a single track train shuttle thing that would run from the East (or West) Falls church metro straight to Dulles and back?

 Problem solved.

I hate Dulles with a passion, but if there was some reliable form of train transit I'd book flights from there.

 Shuttle buses? No thanks.

I just wish they'd stop referring to Dulles as a Washington DC airport.

Islip's airport is only 40 miles from NYC proper, and THAT'S not considered a New York Metro Airport.
Woof.

DC to Dulles is only 26 miles. Quick drive.

The Washington Flyer from West? Falls Church is not that bad.  And there's an express Metro bus that runs from DC and Rosslyn.  Now I just drive and park in long term.

alot of cities have airports that are far out in the burbs, but whether you like or dislike dulles is fairly immaterial to the argument. the dc area needs public transportation to the airport, and it needs to ease congestion in the dulles corridor and especially tysons corner. if anything they should take it out to purcellville because thats the way the burbs are heading

as i'm sure you're aware, the drive is anything but quick during peak hours.  an airport that is convenient only part of the day isn't very useful.  getting from DC to dulles between 4 and 7 pm is a nightmare - yet that's exactly when i'd have to driving to the airport to catch most of my flights.

economics - cheap public transportation only makes sense with a certain volume.  one train going back and forth to the airport only wouldn't achieve that volume.  need to add in 'burban commuters.  heaven knows that northern VA needs more public transpo, i can only imagine how horrible traffic is going to be in 10 years.

Some of the sweetest non-stop flights originate from Dulles only.  Would you rather shuttle bus or layover?

if the layover is short enough and if i'd have to leave DC in the afternoon/evening, the layover can be preferable.  among other reasons: at least there's a bar with a TV in the airport.  or i can get work done.  but rarely both   :)

The destination airport is also a factor, some of the non-stop endpoints are less convenient than those on layover routes, eg Oakland versus SFO.
