i do believe i am going. if it were just tv on the radio, i'd pass, but since birdland, the hush, and the six parts seven are playing, it sounds too good to miss. i'll be there around 10, hopefully.

oh yeah, i'm wearing a red microwaves t-shirt today, so i'm easily spottable.

Thirsty and I are working out the details now.  We most likely will be there.

That was awesome. A strong candidate for concert of the year. TVOTR easily surpassed their performance at the Black Cat in March. I was also very impressed with Apollo Heights.

so darth ed was the only one who made it to the supreme imperial last night? i went, got there late, and left before tv on the radio because it was after 1am and my roommate and i were exhausted and sort of in a bad mood.

i'm not sure what to make of the supreme imperial, but my first experience there wasn't exactly wonderful. when we got to the door, we weren't expecting a doorman to ask for $10; it says "donations" on their website, and the show was supposedly an $8 suggested donation. i am not a fan of false advertisement or sketchiness, especially from a DIY venue. now, i host shows at my house and i would never advertise something as anything other than what it is; donations are donations, and if you are going to charge, then be up front about it. we asked the doorman about the inconsistency, and he said it's "an old school trick to claim donations and then charge." not cool. i hate to whine about such stuff, but knowing i'd be forced to cough up $10, i would have stayed in dc and gone to califone or tone instead.

in addition to that, the change-overs between sets took abnormally long, like half an hour between.  we got there at 10:30 and managed to see apollo heights and birdland (we missed the six parts seven and the hush), and we left after 1 and tv on the radio still had not started. also, it was hot as hell. this venue will be brutal in the summer.

on the positive side, the venue is large and can accommodate large acts, though there isn't a raised stage, so it's hard to see from past the front. apollo heights were good and very interesting, a multi-racial trio (singer/guitar/bass) with drum machine backing. sort of like prince or andre 3000 singing for a psychedelic indie-rock band. birdland were fantastic and have great chemistry, which isn't surprising, considering sean and katrina have been playing together for years. katrina's vocals never cease to amaze me...she's like nick cave circa the birthday party meets pj harvey.

i'll probably be up there again on the 24th to see glass candy, weird war, and the hush. hopefully, it will be a better experience.

Too bad! I thought TVotR started around 12:45am by my watch, but there was a long delay before TVotR actually started playing,  so I'm not sure if that's when they took the stage or that's when they started playing. They definitely finished around 2:15am. It was one hell of a set.

Frankly, $2 more didn't bother me one bit. I thought the amount of music for the price was outstanding. I got to see five bands play for nearly 5 hours for $10. I would have easily paid triple that just to see TVotR and nobody else.

OK, now that I'll agree with. It was pretty hot in there. Personally, I'm used to sweating at concerts.

Excellent description of Birdland! I couldn't make out the lyrics for their first song at first due to the echo effect on Katrina's vocals, but it really sounded like Nick Cave's classic "The Carny". It wasn't though. But I did think 'Trina was channeling Nick Cave on a couple of other songs too. A few of the songs early in their set reminded me of Einstruzende Neubauten (sp?) too, but maybe that was my imagination.

I'd definitely be willing to return to the Supreme Imperial if the right band was playing.

I made it to the Supreme Imperial along with NKOTB(ie), Walkie, and a friend of his.  TVOTR was exceptional.  I was less than impressed with the rest of the bands.

Birdland sounded a bit too faux cabaret for me.  I thought Katrina worked well on Staring at the Sun though.

Got Haggis?

so I saw both TVotR and Birdland at the ottobar when they opened up for Firewater.....thought both were great.  Where can I find more information about Birdland?  Searching for them on google seems to be worthless, heh.

to be honest, i was just in a bad mood, and i had my roommate with me, who was in an even worse mood. i like tv on the radio, but not so much that i absolutely had to stay.

i usually refrain from making a big deal about DIY show prices, but i feel that the supreme imperial should be more forthright on their website. that's all.

i'll be going up there again for something good, as i'm sure it'll treat me better next time. however, i'm sure it will be hotter than hell in the middle of summer.

Were you the couple that was rocking out to TVotR in front of the stage on the right side? And did you or someone in your group manage to acquire the TVotR set list afterwards? I spoke with someone after the concert about that and got a good look at that set list...

Yeah, we were off in that general direction, maybe one row back from the stage.  But if you're referring to a couple, I guess you meant that guy and girl in front of us?  Not to say that Thirsty isn't a good date, but you know, I didn't see no flowers OR dinner.
