the von bondies sucked really bad.
 
 turn down the fucking sound so we can hear the actual song.  if i was 15 i would have loved the overdrive sound and the fact that they sounded like they were just banging on their instruemnts as hard as they could.
 
   they looked like snotty assholes and they played even worse.

 In a just world The Von Bondies not The Darkness would be selling out the 9:30 club in a minute.  They came to Fletchers with the intention on proving they are more than another Detroit band that got in a punch up with probably the cities current biggest star.  In a musical battle of the bands the Von Bondies would win hands down.   The Von Bondies sound has what the White Stripes are increasingly beginning to lack, which is a hard working rhythm section and a second guitarist to fill out the sound.  The band which rocked hard when I saw on the backstage of the Black Cat many moons ago, is now a tight house destroying unit.    Jason has become a much better lead guitar player and singer, and the rest of the group are just playing rock solid behind him.  Thundering bass lines often double by the second guitarist are driven by the talents of kick ass drummer.  The Darkness may have the image and the hype, but The Von Bondies deliver the goods and will be around long after that second record fails to meet the record companies sales expectations for the likes of the Strokes.
 
 It also should be pointed out that it became quite apparent that when arriving at the club I was almost entirely surrounded by people with X's on thier hands.  As the evening progressed the ratio shift towards more of aged patrons, but I was beginning to feel a bit like Mankie did the other night.  Most of the X's, accompanied by more parental units and other relative then I've seen at show in awhile,  were there to see the first act Vintage Sky.  My take on Vintage Sky is that the popular girls had formed a band and must have recently won a battle of the bands.  Because quite frankly my hamburger was more interesting...
 
 The Izzy's had their share of parental units in attendence as well.  It was apparently a bit of a homecoming for some of the band members who had relocated to NYC to seek thier fame and fortune.   I was worried the guitarist would bump his head on the ceiling he was so tall.  The Izzy's are a worthwhile second look.

Huh, were you at the same show I was.  I thought they rocked the place.  Volume wasn't that excessive, he turned down from sound check.  Overall they did a good show, played well and had good energy throughout.  Realize the Von Bondies are Jason wailing on guitar, that is the core of their being.  I guess you didn't catch Burning Brides there, now that was loud...

perhaps the volume itself wasnt so loud, but the fact that, from where i was standing at least, you couldnt hear ANY of Jasons guitar.  it was just some loud chords, none of the solo stuff was coming through.  It was like they were all just up there strumming.  Most of the songs sounded the same.
 
  maybe i am just getting old, but i like to hear all of the different instruments seperately and together.
 
   the burning brides were loud, but sounded 10x better. The Von Bondies did get a little better as they went on , but hardly enough to make up for the beginning.
 
   if you have heard Pawn Shoppe Heart, you would see how much different that CD sounds than Lack Of Communication. much more refined, better vocals, more tune, whatever, it was all lost at the show.  thats just what i think.

Pretty much live Jason's sound is that mushy heavily distorted guitar.  I don't know how much their sound guy was kicking it in the PA, but that was the sound on stage.
