NYC this saturday
« on: January 12, 2006, 01:31:00 pm »
help me decide, thinking about hitting up:

 akron/family @ knitting factory
-- anyone seen these guys before?  kind of dreamy psych-folk like older MMJ without as much reverb, not sure how boring it would be live

 alec ounsworth @ tonic
-- supposedly not playing CYHSY stuff, just solo acoustic guitar songs, but i really like his voice

camper van beethoven @ bowery ballroom
-- this may seem like the obvious choice to a lot of people, but i just never got into them that much

misshapes @ don hills (tom vek guest DJ)

anyone know of any other hotspots for this saturday?

akron/family ... boring live act? ha! their record is not much at all like their live show. they are fucking insane. played for nearly two hours for about 30 of us at iota in december. runs the gamut from heavy, tripped out psych to animal collective-ish campfire singalongs. and really, just about everything in between. those dudes are crazy.

Is akron/family Michael Gira?  If so, I'd go see that.

Isn't the Lion King playing on Broadway of something?

Seriously though...if there's not anything you're madly into seeing, there's plenty of other stuff to do in NYC.

But I guess you should take full advantage of the nonsmoking atmosphere while you're there!

 Cheers,

Explanation of Lion King reference:

I once went to London with someone who I thought was a "hip" girlfriend, and when we got there, she was rather vocal about wanting to get $75 tickets to the fucking Lion King show. Yuck. Fortunately, all the shows were sold out, and we broke up not long after landing in the States.

I'm talking about nightlife options ... I could go out to some shitty post-frat bar in murray hill, or I could go to a show or a cool party that plays music I enjoy ... it's not like i'm choosing between MOMA and a club

but any suggestions would be much appreciated (although i have no plans on seeing the lion king)
