sure, sure ... i don't want to write a thesis here, my only point being that many people on here are completely ignorant of hip-hop, but still often make these broad-brush statements about rappers [/b]
Being thinking human beings we tend to form opinions from the information we are presented with...and all I hear, or see on MTV for that matter are close up shots of womens genitalia while some idiot grabs his nuts while ranting on about his homies and his biatches and kill that muthafucka whitey pig....sorry, you must blame the messenger on this one.

I'm not the hip hop police or anything but that seems willfully ignorant of you to say. One needn't be too wise to know that MTV pimps music of the lowest common denominator -- whether its bootie shakin club/kegger anthemz or of the mallpunk twinky breath variety -- the common thread being a focus on image & lifestyle. Those being the two things that kids latch onto the quickest in their adolescence to form their identity. Being a bad ass roughneck has always been a strong image in us pop culture. Just look at how the media mythologized 50 cent as if he was some superhuman force that could walk through walls or something. The labels like to run this image into the ground because it works; it sells. If all I had was MTV to evaluate Punk by, I'd probably consider it to be pretty damn shallow too. Try applying some clinical thinking sometime instead of reachinng impulsive generalizations based on your own cultural biases.

edit: I should also add that if you're curious about hearing some Rap that doesn't suck, listen to this uplifting and inspiring artist named Project Pat. He has all the answers.

Thanks for saying that.

honestly, that makes you sound really ignorant ... and the thing that really disturbs me is that there are TONS of people exactly like you, who really just have no idea what hip-hop is, but can easily dismiss it with stereotypes like this

Not in the slightest.....I just don't give a toss about political correctness, I simply call things as I seem them...It's a Manc thing isn't it Jag?

Change the colour of their skin, tweak the words slightly and see what happens. Just ask the Greaseman.

*disclaimer* I in no way condone the Greaseman's comments. In fact, I found them utterly disgusting and offensive, but no more disgusting and offensive than the lyrics of most of the hip hop/rap music aired over MTV.

Liberals are amazing in that they can academize just about anything.

Sure, it's a turd, but you have to respect where it's coming from. If you don't, you're an ignorant hatemongerer.

Hiphop is almost singlehandedly responsible for the downward slide in Black music from the 1980's onward. Put all of the rappers together, and they wouldn't have 1/10 the talent or taste of a Billie Holliday, Louis Armstrong, Robert Johnson, Ella Fitzgerald, Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, Arthur Alexander, Bessie Smith, or Memphis Minnie.

ok, if you "call them as you seem them", then what hip-hop have you seem that talks about killing that "muthufucka whitey pig" ... it just seemed like you applied stereotypes you have about black folks to the hip-hop you've never really listened to ... am i wrong?

it's really too bad that these albums are completely devoid of musical talent and disrespect the history of their culture and race ... pretty embarrassing, if you ask me

Rhett, do you listen to hip-hop? or have you just encountered it in passing while surfing through the cultural stew?

I could say the same thing about country music if all I heard of country music was Gretchen Wilson or Big and Rich while I changed the radio channels ... I mean, goddamn, the crap on country radio is singlehandedly responsible for the downfall of country music since the "outlaw" era of the 70s ... what? there's country music out there that honors traditions of its past and continues to create fantastic music? how could i have ever known about that?

Good hip-hop has a tight relationship with the soul and R&B music not only of the past, but of the present ... just look at the Philly scene, rappers and soul-types mix and match constantly, all of whom uphold the musical standard of many of the artists you mentioned
