Green Day / Jimmy Eat World Rollcall
« on: August 25, 2005, 11:37:00 am »
Will this be the Gig of the year?  Everyone's gonna be out in full force for this one.  Right? Supposedly there will be some special mosh pit area created for this show.

With all that said, I'm DJing 932 that evening.  Swagger The Musical will be in full effect.  So 932 will be a rockin, so please come a knockin.  And tip your bartenders well...

You guys enjoy the show, rock out, and Kosmo - please keep an eye on my wife.  :)

I have the honour and pleasure of spending next week in Columbus, OH for work. Which is why someone else will be playing the role of stand-in husband for the show. Oh, lucky me.

I'll be there, too, on the lawn. Only my 2nd Green Day show following the first time around at Lollapalooza in WV, when was that, 10 years ago? Might be a rainy stormy night, though, on Tuesday.  That hurricane remnant will be in the VA-MD region on Tuesday. Break out your wellies ...

15,000 other people will disagree with me on this, but Green Day were a letdown.... This is the fourth time I've seen them live and it's been the same each time.  For 30 to 45 minutes they'll rip through a set of their A-list material, then Billie Joe feels the need to entertain with his verbal diarrhea.

Last night it was several songs from the nicely done "American Idiot" album capped off with "Longview".  At one point I was thinking this was show that would have been worth paying for.  But, then it was on to introducing the band again and the horrid Operation Ivy cover.

Why a band thats "Been together for 16.5 years" can't do a explosive 90 minute set of blistering pop/rock/punk songs straight through without the blather and filler is beyond me.  The bringing up of fans to play on stage is a nice touch, but save it for the encore.  Otherwise the show loses momentum.  Interacting with the crowd is cool, but can also be over done...

Jimmy Eat World on the other hand did a great 35 minute set of cranked up versions of thier bread and butter songs.  I enjoyed it, but you know some kid in the pit was hollering for a Spanish b-side...

Best t-shirt of the evening was the Sham 69 one, worn by some kids mother who must have dug it out of the back of her closet for the show.

932 DJ setlist on it's way.

The show was entertaining, but I agree that Green Day was too long on gimmickry and too short on music.

I did not attend last night, but I've seen Green Day twice in recent years (and once back at Lolla), and they did the exact same "act" every time, right down to bringing the kids up and all that stuff, same pyro, same backdrops - and these tours were years apart. And it's funny, everyone who goes to Green Day and tells me what it's like gives the exact same story. Must be boring doing the same thing 8000 times.

 Plus American Idiot sucks.

That's the test for me.  Plus, bought a cool hat.  Always a plus.
Not going to Green Day for the musicianship, going for the sweat and spectacle.
The Jimmy opening set was good too.  Like Kosmo said, "greatest hits" stuff, but I like that better than the opening act trying to school me on their varied discography.
